I just got off of CNN.com and there was a story in the technology section that said a company called blackhawk, that makes uniforms for police and military, is getting set to make uniforme with built in tourneqettes. There would be 8 in all, 2 in each limb. According to the story, even though great advances have been made in body armour for the trunk, about 60% of wounds are to the limbs, and about 10% of deaths in combat have been directly atributed to uncontrolled blood loss.
The new uniforms should be in production by March.

I was just reading an article somewhere a few weeks ago about advances in battlefield medical care. They noted that tournaquettes had, in the past, been discontinued because once they are applied, the patient MUST get to advanced care quickly. But, these days, injured soldiers get to advanced medical care so quickly that medics are being taught tournaquette usage again.

The MSN article say this was come up with by a surgeon who watched a guy bleed out because he didn’t have a tourniquet. I guess he didn’t have a belt or a shoe string either.

There are already numerous personal tourniquets out there why make a uniform more complicated and heavy than it already is. I also wonder where Blackhawk is going to have these made. For years they have been know for selling foreign made knockoffs at high prices.

It's a cool idea, but doesn't the IFAK already come with a torniquet? Instead of making the Joes spend more on uniforms, having them handy sounds like a better idea.

I think these are targeted at PSCs and hig-speed guys who can pretty much wear what they want. If the built in tourniquet concept wasn't included in the last three uniforms (ACU, ABU, MCCU) we won't see it for a very long time on issued uniforms, unfortunately.
