That's an elegant worker! A rare treat. What's Wild Turkey taste like? (as a European, I only know your fine drink under that name!)

Ahh very good question. The Wild Turkey you speak of is quite nice, but very different from the bird! Just a tiny touch gamey I've heard some say, but I've never thought so. Much more flavorful than store bought turkeys that are farm raised. My father has turkey hunted since I was a kid and I've always loved eating them, but for some reason never hunted. That's not the case anymore though!!

Congrats FF! I have yet to bag a turkey. I am 1 hunt-0 turkey as of yet. I can almost say that I was being hunted on that trip. A yearling moutain lion in Riverside Co. CA was less than a 100 yds from me and flickering his tail. He decided to scamper back into the brush when we made eye contact, exciting none the less. Beautiful knife btw.....

Hiya flyfishrman,

Nice to see ya back in here again. Nice knife. One of my favorite dishes and animals to hunt too. I just recently went out on a 4 day hunt for spring gobbler season and called up a real nice size Osceola Tom just north of me in central Florida, but the old boy was just out of range of my old 12 gauge. I am comfortable at no more than 35 yards with the vintage Remington 870 but he never got closer than 40-45 yards, so I let him be. I still had a great time out as I typically do.

Where did you go Turkey hunting this season?

Is it bad that when I read the title of the thread, I thought McDonald's was putting up a new sandwich?

As a fellow addict of Turkey hunting... You MUST post up some pics of your bird! Details too... weight? beard and spur length? Circumstances of the hunt, etc. I am going this weekend, and I am already useless at work. All I have left to do is re-treat my clothes for ticks. and pack.

Glad to be back Anthony. I've been lurking, just not much to post about as of late. I actually hunt in West TN, usually Somerville, but I shot this bird at a place near Dyer called Chickasaw Wildlife Refuge. It was actually a draw hunt. I live just outside of Memphis, so its TN for Deer and Turkey and about a 30 minute drive west to AR. for the ducks. Just picked up duck hunting this year too and my first drake mallard was banded if you can believe that. Nice year of outdoor firsts for me. As you know my passion is fly fishing, but hunting these birds is pretty darn fun!!

He was an eastern. A young 2 year old bird with a 6" beard and just over 1/2" spurs. Not much of a trophy to anyone but me since he was my first bird.:D:D

Still a nice Eastern Drake! My first Turkey was a Drake almost exactly the same size to the tee. The first always feels FANTASTIC. Ain't nothing quite like sitting down to a turkey supper that you harvested your own self too.. My favorite two ways to cook wild Turkey is deep fried and smoked. Man I am making myself hungry now. :p :D

I haven't been duck hunting in a long time and miss it terribly. Good for you an the Mallard scores. It looks like this old McDonald custom B&T will be getting quite work out from here on in.

Hey all, thanks for the comments. I'm afraid we're getting a bit too far off topic and I don't want the mods to feel the need to shut us down, so if you have more comments or would like pics of the bird PM me and I'll respond. Now back to the heart of the matter....KNIVES!!!:D:D

Jerry McDonald makes great knives. Superb fit and finish in my opinion.

Couldn't agree more. I actually have two of his knives, this Bird and Trout and the drop point hunter below. Both phenomenal and both with beautiful tapered tangs. Aside from the nice handy work Mr. McDonald is a top notch guys as well. Haven't talked to him in a while, better give him a call. Problem is, that when I do call him it ends up costing me a couple hundred bucks for a new knife!:D
