hey, i just got a knife from (roughly) around the 1940's and was wondering how i could clean it? it's got a large amount of dirt along the blade and it kinda went away a bit after i used the Whetstone (yes i did actually wet it first) but i wanna do it safely. anyone have any idea? i'm in Canada for context so if it's american it'll be pricy for me to get

Dishwashing soap, warm water, by hand-towel dried. Then, post pictures.

Make sure the towels are in fact, denim or heavy cotton.

Use a gentle soap...
ill definitely do that! i suspected i could do that but the only issue was since it's so old and so nice, i didn't wanna accidentally damage the blade

Id use warm water and a tooth brush. Either in a bowl to rinse or under running water. If the water seems to be beading off the dirt then it contains oil of some sort. Use some mild detergent. Then mineral oil after it is dried with mild heat.

When cleaning with a rag or towel the grit gets into the towel and scratches the blade. Same thing when washing a car.

Try not to submerge the handle, certainly dont soak it.

Are you wanting to do it yourself or have someone do it for you?

*If doing it yourself
it depends on if you have confidence in disassembling and reassembling it (assuming it can be, without more information idk).

-If you are Disassembling it yourself, just go slowly (plan to take a few days to do it just to be careful) use clr for any corrosion, mineral oil and salt mixed to clean stubborn gunk, and a double sided kitchen sponge. °
-If you just want to clean without disassembly, get a bucket of warm water with a mix of soap and a little clr (a glug or two) and use a wine bottle brush (the ones with a long wire handle and semi soft bristles) for the inside and any detail areas and a double side sponge for the rest. °

°either way after you have it clean apply mineral oil or 3in1 oil with a paper towel across all surfaces, then after 5 min wipe away excess.

* if you want someone to do it for you, where in Canada are you? I'm in alberta, and I'm happy to help, I just don't know how long it would take as I've got some health issues I'm dealing with rn, that make planning when I have energy difficult.
