It's been a long wait, but I just paid for and will recieve a new outdoor toy...err... tool soon:D

Charles May "Refuge" D2 steel Orange G10 scales. Looking forward to taking out out and putting it to use.

I read more than a few great review on Charle's knives back before I ordered the knife. Anyone else use/own one?

That looks sweet. I've been thinking for a long time about getting a smaller knife with orange scales for an every-day belt knife. Combine that with a longer Kukhri or Prang or hatchet (depending on your tastes) and you should be well-covered.

Let us know how it performs!

Looks like a beauty! Do they make them in other than D2?

I have an intangible bias against D2, and it's probably unfounded, but I find myself steering clear of it. Any enlightenment on D2 for a D2phobe?

He uses S30V as well. I feel the same way you do about D2 twords S30V.

I don't know much about S30V. I'm a 1095 guy.

The D2 always seems to get a bad rap due to it's sharpenability.
"Takes a crappy edge but holds it forever".

So, you cna look at it two ways, for wilderness survival, you may not need to sharpen it very often, but, if you do, could be some work.

I've never owned or sharpened a blade in D2, so I am not the one to listen too. I would like to know more about it. If anything, it appears to be becoming more popular as time goes on.

One thing is for sure, it's supposed to be tough.

+1.... Nice knife man!!!! I like the length of the blade and i have actually been thinking about getting a Swamp Rat, i think it is a howling rat, and carrying it on my belt.

Should be in the mail in the next few days. I have never used a d2 blade for field use other than skinning/field dressing a deer. For that is was great. I am looking forward to trying it out. I am a big fan of simple carbon steels, but thought I would try something new. Let you guys know how it goes.

Thanks for the comments:cool:

Very nice looking knife! I really like the ones with "simple elegance" So classy, but still usable...

I'm really thinkin' I may need one of his knives soon.

Afterall, I've only got a dozen or so blades for camping, bushcraft, hunting, etc.....

Myself being one of the rare Scandinavian edge fans, I'd really like to get "My Friend" with the Scandi edge.

Very nice little blade! can't wait to hear more about it.

I almost ordered a "handi scandi" from him. The only reason I didn't is well I own about 6 different scandi's from Helle, kellam, Eriksson, and a few others. I thought I would give a good "flat grind" a shot.

Thanks for the comments:cool:

BTW you can't have enough outdoor blades..... can you? :D

I like the blade, but prefer would prefer a enclosed and tapered tang. Why does he use slab-grip construction?

nice knife. I have a May Holt Collier special in D2 and I love it. As far as sharpening D2, it doesn't seem all that difficult to me but I have a tendency to not let my knives get that dull before touching them up. Enjoy your knife.

There are a couple of advantages to making full-tang slab-handled knives, not the least of which is simplicity; no drilling or mortising required. That equals quick production time and low waste. Certainly a full tang should be stronger than a narrow one. I'm sure you could skeletonize the tang between the rivets/pins and achieve balance and weight of a narrow or tapered tang.
The main differences are cost and asthetics; I think it's a matter of achieving a good design in a couple of ways.

Cliff,

I wish more makers would offer tapered stick tang knives.

It seems that so many equipment makers are not trying to shave the few
ounces that they can. These extra ounces add up quick.
If I never carried the knife/compass etc., while hiking, it would not matter.
This heavy equipment becomes truck gear, cause it stays in the truck.

While I am wishing: Ranger Knives would offer a "tater peeler" instead of
a "shank" and a "steak knife" instead of a "shiv".

There is also the misconception that full slab tangs are necessary for strength. Generally unless the knife is tiny like a small paring knife, I vastly prefer tapered tangs. You can even notice the difference on light utility/hunters like Wilson makes if you compare the South Fork (full slab) vs Coyote Meadow (partial/enclosed).

Ranger Knives would offer a "tater peeler" instead of
a "shank" and a "steak knife" instead of a "shiv".

He has a strong tactical background so most of his knives come from that viepwoint. Last I talked to him he was considering more utility based applications. He is very open to new designs, you might want to drop him an email.
