Hey all,

Every so often someone asks about Valiant Co. I just got a couple blades in yesterday, and like my previous ones, they're mean little weapons!

The second -- parang latok -- looks very strange, but actually is alot of fun once you get used to swinging it. You can deliver a tremendously powerful chop&slash from very close range by cutting from the elbow.

Cool! I haven't talked to Wandi in a while, I should give him a ring. NOBODY does convex edges like Valiant Co. At least nobody I've tried. My $40.00 dollar golok is sharper than my old Blackjacks!

Anybody else try the goloks? I think I'm going to have to pick up one soon myself.

Thanks. The blade seems to be piled damascus (ie. alternating stacks of long steel layers), but because of some "spill-over" it has a cabled look from a distance.

I keep hope that the HI kamis will try their hands at some of these (to us) odd blade styles. People who like khukuris are sure to enjoy these things too -- they cut well and really flow in the hand.

Beoram has few golok, including this one: http://www.jnanam.net/shastra/val-naga.html

Yes, I have a few Valiant products. They're very nice, and also reasonably priced, and Wandi, the manager, is very friendly as many people here may know. Their knives are a rather different style from HI, but good in their own ways. The 'Naga' golok shown above is my favourite from Valiant.

Anyone know if Valient has the survival goloks in stock?

Last time I tried to contact them they were out.

Also, it seems like they have ongoing problems with their website.

The biggest problem their website has now is staying current. Having just been there, though, it looks like there's some survival models in stock. I mean, a couple might have sold since the last update but I can't imagine ALL of them have. I have the survival golok L...used to be the biggest. Now they've got the XL and I think an XXL!!

Actually the Standard, Double Damscas, and Mini khuks all have them. Go to the "Blades of the World" page and scroll down. It's only a couple that are minus a cho. The Standard is the beefiest, at 5/16, so they're not going to have the chopping power of HI. Like all his other stuff, I bet they're super sharp though. :)

Are Valiant knives "real"? I mean in the sense of are they usable working knives like HI that you can actually use to chop and work with. Do the handles hold up? Do the edges hold? Do the blades break? Do they have the old convex edges?

The Valiant knives I have seem to be quite 'real' (I know exactly what you mean). Actually the one I have used the most is the 'fancy' looking naga golok pictured above. But the goloks wouldn't necessarily be very good, say, for chopping logs... They are much lighter than HI blades (which obviously has advantages and disadvantages). I haven't got any very heavy blades from them (if they make them?), so I don't know.

The handles seem to hold well, though on one like the naga golok because it is intricately carved, there would be a potential to break bits off, though it is pretty well streamlined. The edges seem to hold, but this varies from blade to blade like any handmade knives I would guess. The naga golok has a convex edge, and I believe the other ones I have from them do also.

I imagine for the light blades like golok one might be able to break the blades by trying hard enough. Again it would probably depend on your particular usage.

If you're going to depend on a single blade, you're probably still best off with an HI! But Valiant has pretty good prices (or, they did when I bought from them, I don't know if they are the same or not), so you probably could get one of their more 'basic' models of whatever type of knife you're interested in to try for a fairly low 'investment'.

hope this helps.

My friend Jean-marc has quite a number of Valiant blades and is very taken with them. He has some reviews up here:

Thanks. I going to stick to the HI knives for my heavy duty knives. I just like the feel of a Khukuri and trust their quality and reputation. Although to preserve their reputation, quality, and longevity, I do wish that they would start making the Khukuri's and edges like the old days in shop 2 that everyone has be talking about. However, with other types of knives/swords, I'm the kind that even if it's a wall hanger I want it to be capable of "real" use.

* I have two VC pieces I consider 'heavy cutters,' one of which is actually a khukuri. They have both performed very well as choppers, in large part I think to their thick spines (little over 1/3"). But as Beoram pointed out, VC's specialty is their range of lighter fighting swords that come in such a fantastic variety from that region.

* As Yaj indicated, the first blade is indeed an Adya Katti, but surprisingly its blade is not as thick as you might imagine. Though it looks like a khukuri-ish cutter, handling it reveals that it's actually more like a hook. The COP is at the point, whose penetration is backed by the wide blade portion behind it. Once it's in, the curve catches and tears the wound wide open. A really well-thought-out design!

Never heard of Valiant before, but they look like good gear, thanks.

Ordered two of their knives to give to folks I've already given HI kuks to. :)

To anyone who knows:

I want a small, light knife to carry with me on day hikes and I was thinking of either a small suvival golok or a golok babad. Any recommendations? I can't afford another H.I. right now and I think I'd like to get something other than a khuk any way. :footinmou Ruel? Anyone?

Oh, BTW I know its been awhile so, (in my best Dr. Nic) Hey Everybody!
