Well I've been considering a new Vanguard for a while now and Flatlander1963's recent thread put me over the edge. I bought one of the CPM154's also and what a gem it is:

What a great handling knife the Vanguard is, this one will be with me this fall for sure. Normally I don't like blade coatings but this one is a nice subtle gray and goes well with the darker handle. Sheath is pretty good, though I would trade the narrow angled strap for a 119-style wide band around the handle if I could (and maybe a sturdier belt loop).

Can one of the Buck folks give me a little history on these? I can't find any info on this particular steel/coating combo anywhere. My guess is that it was a SFO for Bass Pro or something similar? Date code is 2006.

Well i know that my dad uses a buck vanguard as his hunting knife and i believe hes had it for over 10 years

Have the dimensions of the Vanguard changed? I owned one a number of years ago and gave it to a friend. I recently purchased another..and it seems smaller than I recall.

I'm with you 100% on the coating. This is a nice job. I would order it from the CS if it was available on 110's and 112's. Apparently it is a BP exclusive. I believe that we both have a Bass Pro knife.

As to the sheath...I immediately thought it was not sturdy enough for such a robust knife. I'm going to try to replace the sheath if it gets the nod this fall for carry in the field (problem with a number of choices and I like them all).

Of interest, BP has a Vanguard stag that is very nice looking. I have a $20 off offer and I may not be able to resist. I just wish it was in a higher grade of steel but.....

I'm glad you like your knife. I think the Vanguard is one of the best designs available. I especially like the contour of the handle and balance. The knife just feels good in your hand.:thumbup::thumbup:

Ok, I had to buy the BP Vanguard in Stag. With my $20 off coupon it was $142. That is a great value for a great knife design in stag IMHO.

Congrats on the new knife, Flatlander! The very model that you ordered, is on my 'must have' list. Don't forget that we like pictures. ;)

I'm looking forward to pic's of the BP stag too, I've stared at that one for a long time myself. :)
