New version of my water-tight survival kit

I was looking at some different ways to come across making a survival kit out of the aluminum tin that I had posted yesterday. This is more of a self contained survival kit within itself, by containing a Victorinox SAK with a locking blade, saw, and several other tools. Also inside is an Aquamira Frontier water filter straw. A great point that TTD brought up is by including a small ziplock bag, you can move all the items inside it and use the tin as a small cooking pan and boil water in it also. I also included a few chlorine dioxide tabs and a 1 quart water bag as a back up to the straw, which could be easily swapped out for a small packet of medical items. The size of the tin is 5" x 3.5" x 1".

Nice kit!

I recently got a Fox Parang which comes with a survival kit in a MOLLE pouch. The kit is contained in one of these lovely watertight tins. It's not a bad kit considering that it's an extra. I'll try to post some pics in a while.

333rm, would it be possible to put a mic or caliper on the wall of that box and let us know how thick it is?

Have you thought about putting the straw inside a plastic bag as well and maybe even placing some tape over the drinking end of it?

I'm just thinking that everyone always talks about being dunked in water and getting soaking wet and if your box gets a dent or tweak from a fall, you may lose your water proofness and your straw could be contaminated at both ends. Usually when things go bad, they REALLY go bad.

For my straws, I actually use a Food Saver and vacuum seal them. When I check them, all I have to do is make sure the vacuum is still on the package and I know I'm good to go.

I'll try to round up a set of calipers and let you know the wall thickness of the aluminum. This was another kit I threw together to give people some ideas of what can fit in this tin and new ideas for survival kits. I do have that same filter in the Tactical Tailor E/E Pouch that makes up one of the survival kits that I carry sometimes and I did duct tape both ends up to keep anything out. If you go back to page 123 ( My EDC Survival Kit ) you can check it out. Thanks!

Nice looking kit ;) Might I suggest some heavy duty garbage bags? They are very versatile, can be used for fishing, gathering water, making a shelter a Pancho and improvised flotation device and you beat how compact they are:D

I really would of liked to put a garbage bag in this one but there is absolutely no more room! In order to fit a 4" SAK and a water filter inside I had to make compromises in other places. It's a good idea though.

Awesome looking compact kit.

You could wrap the trash bag to the tin with with some paracord.

Maybe choose a smaller SAK (99% of SAKs have a can opener so you can ditch the P-38), change the Bic lighter to a mini Bic, place the battery in the AA light with a peice of duct tape on the positive terminal..or eliminate that light altogether and get a small keychain LED that's about the size of a quarter..every little bit counts!

EDIT:
If you could get your hands on a vinyl foldable canteen from the old USMC survival kits, you might need that more than a garbage bag..

Looks good bro, I like the tin and the set up in general. I've been looking for the right container to do something similar with some things and my AH1. Where did you pick up that tin?

Actually I was going to ask this too

The only place that sells the tin as far as I know is www.cardinalgear.com. I had bought it from another site a few months back, but after checking their site I've noticed that it's gone. I have another survival kit in the same tin on here right now you can check out also, it's in a whole different thread. Maybe is we're lucky Mike can track down who makes it and they can offer it for sale on the ESEE web site?!?!:D:D

Yeah I could of put a smaller SAk inside since I do have one. I actually had a mini Bic inside and swapped it for a regular one to see how much more room it would take. The battery you see is an EXTRA AAA battery for the flashlight, it already has a battery inside. The garbage bag would have to go on top of all the items and there just isn't room for one in this version. I think survival kits are a compromise of what you need, and what you would LIKE to have. Sometimes you feel you may need all of them so you have to get TINY versions of everything or change your case to something MUCH, MUCH larger, which prevents you from carring it on you all the time. We have to learn to multi-task with some items or use things in nature to make due since we simply can't carry everything we'd like to have with us at all times. Thanks for all the comments guys!

That's pretty much what I was thinking, or fold it down to the same dimensions as the tin and tie it to it. The Trekker, or in my case the Soldier, is about as small a knife as I would want in a kit.
