I wanted one these nice new trekker knives that victorinox is making for the german army. "Low and behold", smoky has some!!! I just received them int he mail the other day and I must say that I really like this one!!! I had one handed trekker with a leather pouch and flashlight, but this one, I like the green handles with the Bundeswehr eagle:

http://smkw.com/webapp/eCommerce/pr...rman&list=50&range=1&order=Default&SKU=V54876

The description (on smkw) has it as having the toothpick and tweezers, it does not.

I use to have some of the 4 1/8" (or 1/4") ones victorinox made for the German army years ago (before the knives were given to the Italian contract) that I had bought when I was stationed at Rheinmain AB in Germany (in the early 90's). Victorinox made this same knife for Mauser, but with an added clip blade (if I remember correctly). I wish I could find some of those victorinox made ones in mint.

Anyway, I would highly recommend this Bundeswehr version of the Victorinox trekker.

How is the spring resistance with regards to the one-handed operation? I assume that it can't be as easy to open like, say,a Spyderco folder.

The spring on this model has been lightened to accommodate the one hand operation. Enough to keep it securely closed, just about as easy to open as my Endura.

Is the main blade plain edged, 50/50 or all serrated?

The blade is 50/50...more like 60serrated/40plain. The serrations are a good compromise pattern. Mild enough to handle plenty of work you might prefer a plain edge for, and effective enough for serrated work.

Keep in mind, it's serrated near the tip, unlike most combo edges that are plain at the tip and serrated near the tang.

It looks identical to the Trekker, except maybe the Trekker does have the toothpick and tweezers. Still, a nice looking Vic. I'm leaning more and more towards Vic/Sak's these days. They just seem like very decent knives, at good prices, and of course extremely useful. I have an older Super Tinker without the hook and I just picked up a regular Tinker (today in fact) as it's a little slimmer than the Super. I also have a Rambler on my keychain and a Centurian I rotate through my pockets. Though I still like my other Benchmades, Spyderco's, Bucks, etc, I just can't get away from these things.

All in all, when someone asks me what knife they should get for themselves or as a gift for someome else I almost always recommend a Vic or SAK of some kind. More of a general purpose tool that just happens to have a blade (or two) tucked away in it somewhere.

sak is correct, especially about the serrations being mor elike a 60/40. The spring tension is pretty light, enough to open the knife. Its definitely not quick like most one-handers, but its a very useful knife!

You really cant go wrong with one!! Now since the serrations are on the blade tip, it does take some getting use to, but it is worth it!!

Or if you can't get used to 'em, do like I and others have ddone, and sharpen them down to a plain edge! ;)

The serrations on these are not like other folders, these are more "shallow" scalloped and cut much cleaner.
