Great vid! Thanks for taking the time to do all that crazy editing. How much would you say you have into that grider set up?Do I need to sell a kidney or just plasma?

Dude, that is a sweet setup. I love how it is so easily modified to fit whatever step you're at.

Very interesting, Daniel. Thanks for posting
Thanks!

I have around $2000 in it and have probably spent three times that on belts now. I am on platen #3 and you can use both sides of them.

Tip - You can actually do just as clean grinds on a cheap 4x36 grinder but the KMG is more versatile and costs less over time. You can start on a 4x36 then upgrade later, I'd still use my $20 flea market special for grinding flats but I straight wore it out.

They are great, the simple rock solid design really sold me. I plan on making some fixtures for it eventually, I want a movable tool rest.

KMG, Bader, Wilmont, Hard Core - all top notch. I consider a Hard Core Grinder next, they are just killer. Horizontal KMG too...

Exactly! Sasquatch parts go for double... just saying.

Thanks Daniel!
I hope Pohan watches this vdo. :D
Rolf

lmao I'll really school Pohan! :p

That is funny because I spent about 4 hours last night reading about his start in folder making. I think it was the most helpful info yet.

Dang, I was hopeing to keep the kidney.
Daniel , you are quite the salesman. My wife watched your vid and she said "why don't you just get one, you need a grinder don't you?" I said "yes yes I NEED a grinder and a drill press and a heat treat oven and and and ......
Have a good day y'all.

Too funny!

They offered me millions to be the spokesperson for the grinder but wanted a photo! I told them no photos, lmao!

Looks like a great gift for your great grandson...because it will be lasting that long. The one ting I love about belt grinders is their simplicity. I'm goign o make my own rather than buy one, but if I were to buy one I would get the one you ahve.

Do you actually need all 2HP for grinding?? That seams just a little overkill to me. 1HP is understandable, but 2??

I agree...

2hp for grinding - I think it all depends. I can easily bog it even at high speed and tension while hogging steel or even finish grinding. On the other hand I don't see why 1hp wouldn't be fine too. KMG offers a 1.5, 2 and 3hp so I went in the middle and am very happy with it.

Some days I'll profile 20 plus knives, more power is good for that sort of thing. I had a 1/3 hp grinder and it stalled quite a lot. Some belts like the yellow cubitrons (my favorite grinding belt) require high pressure so the HP is great then as well.

I'm a minimalist as far as equipment goes so the KMG is my kind of style. I looked into making one and they are a really good deal. Add up the price of good contact wheels and you will be close to the KMG base price.

Daniel- Where did you read about Pohan and folder making?

umm that other forum

The thread was an ancient one but I typed "folder" into search and start reading... it was back when he got his mill.

I know it will be tough making folders after reading a few of them. I can't wait! :D

lol!
Dude, reeeeelax... you got skills.
Think about a chisel ground shobu folder.

:D No worries here but you might laugh at the obscene amount of research I do.

Shobu Zukuri - that had seriously never crossed my mind for a folder but now it's on! That is one of my favorite blade styles.

Everyone interested in knives...
Check this site, it has some killer traditional grinds and shows what the heck we're talking about! http://www.ksky.ne.jp/~sumie99/styles.html

I like the kata-kiriha-zukuri; two grinds that I did not know were combined. Talk about sweet asymmetrical action!
