Please be careful of this new Virus. It will come in tp your email just like a normal email from any of us to each other wanting us to check out each others work.I thought that some one had wanted me to look at one of there knives and guess what? I got the Virus and it locked up my computer. It took me all day yesterday just to get the computer back to working now I have to get all my email contacts back in my address book:mad: SO ANY BODY THAT EMAILS ME AND I HAVEN"T ANSWERED BACK PLEASE TRY AGAIN,and those that I normaly corespiond back and forth with Please send a email so I can put you back in my address book:)
I now will have to spend a day just getting everything else downloaded before I can even take a picture of the new Damascus Neck Knife I just finished this weekend and show it off.
I found this site yesterday that will help to fix the problem if you think that you might have gotten the new Virus:
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.sircam.worm@mm.removal.tool.html

Boy this kind of SH$$ Makes me Madder than a old wet hen,I needed to be in the shop working and not fixing the computer...
Please be careful everyone....Bruce

I know what you mean Bruce, I got an e-mail saying it wanted my advice,(Sa****ay) I didn't know the person or what it was about,so like a dumb a## I opened it, Bam, my puter got screwed up. SO WATCH OUT FOR ANY E-MAIL THAT COMES THRU SAYING IT WANTS YOUR ADVICE AND NOT MUCH ELSE. JUST DELETE IF YOU DON'T KNOW THE SENDER. I also got e-mails from other people that I don't know that said I e-mailed them when I didn't, SO WATCH OUT.

I keep my address list in a notebook on top of my computer, If I do get a virus I don't pass it on. Thanks for the heads up.

A buddy of mine got it Bruce
He has aol.
The virus folks said it came in an email that went out over the aol net!

The way to keep yourself from getting any of these newer automailing virii is to watch what file types you open. If it ends in .exe or .vbs especially, ditch them. A common trick these days is to hide the true file type by putting another one in front of it. It's a really transparent trick. It will often show as something like
Attachment: virusname.jpg.vbs
Just watch the last three letters of the file. Anything before that is irrelevant, especially the text of the message. If it's not a .jpg .gif or .bmp, then it's not a picture. If it's not a picture, and you didn't ask for it, then you probably don't want it.
We got a lot of this kind of attack when I was doing email administration for Intel. For some reason, these also got past the filters we had in place, and I had to catch them manually, so don't trust your software to catch everything.
I hope this rambling is of use, and I'm sorry you got hit, Bruce.

Hey Bruce, I sent you an email last night. It bounced back to me. I'll try again.

It seems like there is lots of virus (computer ones) going around. My virus software has been working overtime trapped two last week, coming in on emails from people I don't even know. I use Norton with auto update enabled and it seems to download new ones definitions all the time.

Makes you wish people with that much talent would put it to good use instead of mischief. :(

Thank for the warning Bruce!!!!If you want I can send you a bunch of maker's and supplier's links via email.

Thanks everybody.I hope I didn't end up sending it out to a bunch of people myself,If I did and any of you got it I am really sorry.
Thanks L6 but I think I have a handle on the links I needed,I really needed to clean out the hard drive anyway,I just hatted that it happened this way.I think I will make some kind of a back up for the address book from now on.
Bruce

Bruce was it this virus? "W32.Sircam.Worm@mm"
I got it in an attachment from Triple Aught Design. Patrick and Josh inadvertly sent it.
Luck was on my side as I had just the day before downloaded the new Norton Anti-Virus software for a trial run. Luck me. It set off bells and sirens!

If you don't run Anti-Virus software another good way to avoid this sort of thing is to use an email account like Yahoomail or such. All their mail activity is scanned for virus' and they have the latest in protection, that's what I was told.

A firewall is a good idea too. Checkout Zonelabs.com They have a free download and it has already caught attempts at intrusion on my system.
Many programs used by hackers are designed to be servers.
One of the ways ZoneAlarm™ protects you is by detecting server programs that are listening for connections and instructions from remoteclients.

When ZoneAlarm detects a program acting as a server, the firewall blocks the incoming connection.
This will protect you from identity/property theft through Trojan Horses. However, you may have
programs (like ICQ or NetMeeting) that act as servers as part of their core functionality.

I had it come back to me again last night, but I was smarter this time and I deleted it real quick like. But I still went to the site I showed and run it on the computer and it didn't find anything so I was safe.
If you think you might have it that system doesnt take but a couple of minutes to run and it will let you know,I have been keeping my virus scan updated also and it still got by it.
I hate this kind of stuff,I would rather have to make a Knife out of mild stell and then cut my way out of a box with it before going through this stuff again...

We got the same virus today, took my wife 3+ hours to get things back in order. We now have done a recent backup!

Shotgunone, I used to think the way you did but had it explained to me that the people that write these viruses do it to sell you more programs to prevent it so they make more money! Jerks!

Glad to hear that you're squared away :)
So where's the neck knife pic? ;)
I sent you an e-mail, just to see if it works...
Take care,
Wally

Ebbtide,I still have to Re-Install the camera and scanner and other toys like that,I have been busy on a knife and Sings sheath.I have also been trying to get Homestead squared away so my website works properly.I will get a picture up soon though.

http://www.housecall.antivirus.com/

You can also go to the site above and do a free housecall.
You have to download a fairly small program but it is worth it. I visit there about every month or so and run it again.

By the way, what was in the subject line of the email and the file name. I received an xls.com file but did not open it.
