New vs. Old: Which hawks are best?

Sorry, bud, but I don't think there's an answer for that. It's like an answer looking for a question.

Not all hawks are created equally regardless of when they were made.

Oh I know. it was more on design and whatnot :P Plus I figured there might be a few good links.

Of course it's personal preferences but what type of hawk are you asking about, forged? full-tang? Also what is the intended use?

Some hawks are designed toward fighting, like the Winkler Sayoc while others are more breaching oriented like RMJ Shrike. Both can be used in either role but excel in their designed role. Both companies offer multiple designs suited for each role. There are several companies that offer forged hawks. Wolf Creek Forge once they start taking orders again is worth a look. The owner, user name Kentucky offers them from time to time in the exchange.

Not really sure. I have 250 bucks and I want something awesome. I'm going fort turner for a camp hawk but I want something deadly and durable as hell

Take a look at JK Knives. The owner, John is a great guy to deal with and his turn around time is fast. He recently made a couple of hawks you may like that are pretty close to your budget. You could also send him a design if you don't like his. Just another option to consider.

I have a SOG fast-hawk and it is a very useful tool.(or weapon, and it was only 20 bucks) Its a new model made of steel and a composite handle. If I had a choice however, I would like a tomahawk with a wooden handle and a carbon steel blade, but made in the same design as the fast hawk. Old school style and feel, but modeled after a newer type. Best of both worlds.

The SOG Fast Hawk is patterned after the 'hawk Peter LaGana designed in the 60's. You can get one quite similar from Cold Steel and various less reputable manufacturers. Or, you can get the best of both worlds (no, not the movie), with carbon steel head and composite handle from The American Tomahawk Co, called, get this, the LaGana Tactical model!

Given $250 and the desire for a hawk (I'm half way there already) I'd be contacting the good folks at Equinox Coronado. They just released a video of their newest Gen 1 Mk 6 handles, and Mike may have a spare if asked nicely. If you have time for him to make one to your spec, I have a composite wood grained handle that looks amazing.

I was curious if the eyelit on the lagana is large enough for actual wood.
