I am brand new to the survivalist world, but after reading Patriots: Surviving the Coming Collapse I figured at least having some skills and a bug-out bag may not be such a bad idea.

I assume the best place to start is a good survivalist school. I live in Texas, and can easily travel to other states, but thought it may be nice to know about the local plants and such.

I grew up hunting and fishing and lived on a ranch, but I have barely been outdoors at all in the last 15 years once I left home and went to college, med school, etc.. Any skills I may have had would be horribly rusty at this time.

Any input on how to get started would be greatly appreciated..

btw, already ordered my "survivalist" knife from Justin over at Ranger knives after reading all the great comments from you guys on this awesome site.

Thanks!

Well, if you're from Texas and want a chance to practice survival, just walk into any bar and announce that 1.you're gay 2. Kerry is the coolest man ever and Bush should be impeached for stealing the election from him and 3. You hate America and everything it stands for, don't support the war, and don't support the troops at all. That should give you plenty of cause to practice survival in the backwoods for the next several months. Seriously though, good luck with your training, what knife did you get from Justin? I have an RD 7 which I think is perfect for that, and keep a swiss Huntsman and swedish firesteel in the pouch as well. What about going to one of Ron Hood's Seminars I think he may be located out that way.

Yep, gotta love Texas.

Ron Hood's web site says they arent doing the courses anymore. May get some of his videos though...

Yeah, I ordered the RD7 from Justin. He was out of black handles so I am still waiting on it :)

Brian, I didn't mean any harm, just poking a little fun. Sorry if I offended you. I actually support the war and the troops, but I can see both sides of the issue. Anyway that's off topic. Kimper, sorry to hear that Ron's not offering his courses any more. Does Tom Brown ever get down that way, I know that his main school is in NJ, but I thought he did some desert work out there. That's the sense I get from reading his books anyway. Also, what about Larry Dean Olsen's Anasazi Foundation. I don't think it's in texas, but it is closer than Tom Brown. I've read a few of his books and they're pretty good.

That Tom Brown link was pretty informative. It was a good read. I live in Dallas and have looked for reputable schools in this area as well and have come up with nothing so far. Of course depending on what part of Texas you live in there are schools in other states with similar geography. Of course considering that Texas has everything from swamps to deserts it really depends on where you live when determining if a school in Arizona or Georgia would be more like you own area.

BTW Texans aren't all war mongering racists that ride horses to work and wear 10 gallon hats. ;) http://progressiveaustin.org/ http://www.dallaspeacecenter.org/primer.htm I don't know anything about the folks at those links. I just did a google search and grabbed the first couple links that illustrate that in fact not all Texans are war mongering racists contrary to how hollywood or the national network news might be telling you otherwise.

Lets drop the politics now because I don't want to see this thread get locked. I'm hoping that someone will actually know of a school in Texas and post a reply, even if it's when the thread is dug up out of nowhere 6 months from now as threads often are. :D

Has anyone heard of these folks? http://www.camptonkawa.net/home.htm I just stumbled across them after a short Google search.

Looks like they teach primitive living skills more than short term wilderness survival, of course that may actually be what you're looking for. They are a little north of Dallas.

Brian, I'm with you, not usually political at all, so I'm going to drop it. Like I said it was an attempt at humor that fell flat. Myakka, thanks a lot for the links they were really informative. Were you serious when you said that you wanted to know how to make a wooden raft at the end of the article in the first link? If so check out the Air Force Search and Rescue Survival Manual. They have about the best description of how to do it I've ever seen. My bro and I made one as kids, but we cheated and used nails. The AF manual shows you how to do the notches and lashing pretty well without any tools other than a knife/axe and some rope.

Myakka,
Thanks for those links, good stuff there.

Brian,
That camp you linked may be ok.. but I sorta got the impression it was geared towards kids.. all the photos feature 12 year olds. But thanks for looking around. So far I haven't run across anything thats sounds too great in Texas. Maybe I will just go out of state then "brush" up on the local flora from books or something.
