New Watch! Frederique Constant

I think you may have misunderstood the man at the shop. That or he's a bone-head.

It's not that your watch will run dry but that the movement should be serviced (cleaned, inspected, and lubed) every 5-7 years. All mechanical watch movements should be. The more complicated the movement, the more you'll pay for the service.

These days, the most difficult part is finding a truly competent watch maker.

Totally agree. These days I buy cheap mechanical KS watches from China; at around $30 per shot they look cool and just get thrown away when fail. Reliable and competent watchmakers are scarce and want a fortune
to service a Rolex or Omega; can't afford the insurance on my GMT or Seamaster anymore so they just sit in their boxes...

You just need to develop a relationship with one. My watchmaker was trained at the Bulova School. He charges me $55 to service time-only or time/date handwinds and $65 for time-only or time/date automatics. Matters not the maker, and I own several vintage Omegas. Many jewelry shops in the area farm their work out to him. He charges those shops the same as the rest of his customers. Those shops then charge their customers 2 to 3 times what he charges the jewery shops for the work he does on their behalf.

Go straight to the source and build a relationship. Most large cities have competent watchmakers. Even if you can't find one locally, you can find one you can ship to.
