Hi guys,

Im inquiring about the leatherman TI and the new wave. Is the TI stronger, as in, are the knives, pliers, handle made of a stronger material than the new leatherman wave?

I know the has the titanium and suppose to be lighter but does that compromise the strength of the whole knife.

What will will last longer as in durability.

thanks
guys

The Charge Ti has a 154CM plain-edge blade, as well as bronze bushings on the external blades. Wave only has 420HC on the plain edge. Serrated edge blades (and most of the other utensils) are the usual 420HC.

so does the ti have 154cm steel for all the other components of the knife as well. also what do you mean by bronze bushings on the external blades?

Hello Firewire,

The Ti series have 154CM only on the plain-edge blades. All other components are 420HC, and the bit dirvers are S2. The bronze bushings (located on the blade pivots) enable the external blades (knives (plain & serrated), saw and file) to open more smoothly than on the old or newer Wave.

=)

ahh i gotcha, so the stregth in the pliers would be the same then...

what about the strength of the handles, the overall makeup

Yes, the plier strength would more or less be the same since both the 2004 Wave and Ti are similarly designed pliers-wise. In fact, I like the handle design of the Wave 2004 better as it feels more solid to me. My Ti often exhibits a bit of play on the Titanium handle scales (being bolted on as it is). =)

thanks josekym for the insight.

I will have to try them both out, i have the wave now, but i want to see the durability of the ti.

would you pick the TI as overall winner in the toughness and durability area, even with the ti scales?

No problem at all, firewire_pl. =)

IMO, the Ti marginally wins because of the 154CM knife. If edge retention is important to you, then get the Ti as it wins hands down in this respect.

As an aside, the Ti already comes with a removable lanyard ring and pocket clip, as well as several additional driver bits. You have to purchase these items separately if you want them with your Wave. If these features are also important to you, then the Ti is a clear winner.

Im debating this as well, I will probably end up with the Wave, just becouse I will probably never need it anyway.
