I received my new Horizontal sheath, for my Military, yesterday from Vess, and just had to post about it. According to him, it's the first of its' kind in the world!! :D :p (at least the first that he's made ;))

I found it very comfortable for carrying this big Spydie, on my right hip, and both sheathing and unsheathing was a breeze. If anyone is looking for an alternative to pocket carry for your Spydies, not just the Military, I highly recommend Vess for a custom, high quality, leather sheath. You can check out his website HERE.

Thanks, Vess!!

I've actually gotten an email just now from UK asking about Millie sheaths. So far I've made one vertical and one horizontal, but I never thought they could be popular. I mean Gunting sheath I understand totally, Chinook maybe, but Millie... But hey, as long as the demand is there, why not? :D

Now, I'll respectfully hijack this thread and show the pics of something I've been playing with recently. It's a pocket sheath for a Perrin fixed blade, except it's now in COLOUR!

Take a look:

Now I just gotta see what a coloured stamp on a Gunting sheath will look like. Also, I'll have to see if putting sparkling hi-lights on the flower will do something... :)

The sheath is looser than the original Kydex sheath, but since it's a pocket sheath, I don't think it'll matter all that much. Kinda odd in carry, but definitely an interesting alternative to regular belt carry. :)

And the sheath and the knife were last seen heading out into the back yard in my brother's pocket. We'll see how it holds up by the end of the day after some serious use... :) But so far, both thumbs up... :D

Very nice work. Now I don't know much about sheaths and I wonder if that "hook" at the Perrin sheath (where the tip of the knife comes) is for aesthetical purposes or does it have a practical use?

Dialex, That 'hook' will do a couple of things. First; it will help stabilize the knife/sheath in your pocket, keep it from flopping around backwards. Second; if the knife is drawn quickly, for self-defense or other emergency use, the hook will snag on the pocket and make sure the sheath doesn't come out with the knife.

Very cool sheath for the Perrin, Vess. Makes me wish that I still had mine...BUT the Millie sheath still takes the cake, IMHO. :D

BTW, feel free to hijack away......;)

Even though I'm not particularly fond of sheaths for folding knives, I have to admit that I really like the Military's leather sheath.

Outstanding sheathwork, Vess!! Great designs and execution.

Vess,
Once again nice work. How well does that Perrin sheath stabilize with the small "hook" of leather?? I'll drop you an email about it also.
:)

Blades

The usefulness of this pocket sheath depends largely on the pants... :)

For most pants all the hook does is prevent the sheath fron turning inside the pocket (so on the draw the edge is pointing the right way). The sheath is even looser than the original Kydex sheath, so on a draw the hook is usually not needed and the sheath stays inside the pocket on its own. But, when using with my dress pants and really roomy and slick-lined pockets the sheath can come out, at which point the hook grabs the pocket and either stays inside or hangs outside by the hook.

It's an odd design, I know, but works well for discreet carry. Carrying it in a hip pocket (like the cargo pants) works good too, and finally you can stuff it behind the belt and carry it like that... :D

For better retention and "no way it'll get out of the pocket" carry the hook should have been MUCH higher. I am toying with the idea of making another sheath like it, with a higher hook and the sheath coloured black and white like a killer whale (Orca). That way the hook will look like the fin... Now wouldn't that be really cool?! :)

Vess,
You mention the sheath is loose, will the knife fall out if held upside down?? or does it have a little retention on it. I wouldn't want the knife to slide out if I was sitting down. :) Does that make sense?? Just wondering, and thanks for the quick email reply.

Vess,

Try putting the "hook" on the other side and at the top of the sheath - most pants pockets have a hollow there to catch and wipe the sheath from the knife, leaving it in the pocket. I use this principle with the Gunting "Pocket Rocket". Will also allow using slightly more retention if desired.

Blades:

The sheath does have enough retention (at least for now) that the knife will stay in the sheath upside-down. But if you give it a shake, out it goes. Didn't want it too tight, so the sheath would come out, but maybe now it's too loose. I'll have to walk around with it in my pocket and try sitting down a lot to see if it'll dislodge. My bro carried it in his hip pocket and loved it, but as for a regular pocket, I'll check... :)

Mike:

Yes! That's what I meant by making a sheath shaped like an Orca. Imagine, black and white sheath, with a "fin" high on the spine to catch the pocket top, and maybe some teeth and an eye! :) And of course the sheath will be double-sided, so it'll really look like a killer whale with a handle of a Perrin bowie sticking out of it's...oh...bordering on heresy here... :D

With the old design, I was thinking too much along the lines of the Emerson "wave" to consider all the angles... Ah, well... Live and learn. :)

I have the "Gunting Pocket Rocket" and it works very smoothly on the draw.

Can anyone point me in the direction where I can find a few pictures of the Pocket Rocket?

Just can't wrap my mind around a Gunting completely inside a pocket. How about the horn of the knife catching the pants on the draw? Can someone describe the layout for me? :)
