Hey All -

I just got a new wicked edge Gen 3 Pro system, but I don't have any knives I'm willing to practice with. Any suggestions on a decent knife I can buy to learn on?

Thx

Something inexpensive - look for a cheap (non serrated) set of kitchen knives...ideally used. Yard and garage sales, estate sales, thrift shops, craigslist.
Once you start getting comfortable, family and friends will probably let you sharpen theirs; so you shouldn't have to keep buying things to practice on (just don't take on anything expensive, just in case).

I have had mine for about 2 months. There is a learning curve but not bad. Worst thing I did was to take off too much metal on an endura when still learning the basics (not a big deal but I should have probably practiced more on cheaper stuff)

A good way to start is with cheap kitchen knives. Watch some you tube videos on finding the angle and finding the seeet spot (clamping position for different knives).

I was thinking of a pocket knife, but I like your idea of a kitchen knife. How do you like your WE? I was looking at them for 2+ years and finally pulled the trigger on the big boy...

Get some aftermarket stops so you don't bring the stone down to the side of the blade and scratch it. Find them on the WE forum, search "stone stops". They are 3D printed by a member there.

The lapping film seems overly expensive and cheesy, but don't be fooled, it works really well.

When sharpening, use a sturdy desk or countertop, a wobbly table will drive you crazy and get poor results.

Get a Wi-Fi or USB microscope to really see what is going on. All the cheap ones seem to be about the same quality.

Consider getting a sharpness tester. It's a fun way to quantify your results and test your technique. Caution with this one, it opens up a full-sized rabbit hole to fall into.

Start with a couple of small kitchen knives. Once your stones are broken in, you will be ready to sharpen anything you have.

Congratulations on your new purchase, you will love it. The suggestions about getting some cheap knives and practicing and getting to know your new system is good advise, but if i can give you one bit of advise " Take Your Time ". Patience will be your best friend, as JBoone said he took of too much metal, a classic mistake when learning how to use a new system, once metal is removed it cannot be replaced. So i implore you, go slow, take your time and, this is most important, keep inspecting your work as you go. Go slow, take your time, inspect your work/progress and take a break if you have to and come back to it. Once you get used to your new system you will really enjoy your sharpening sessions, just take your time.

There is also guys that will help on the WE forum. And at the top right you can click on, "Knowledge Base" for a lot of great helps and info.
You can buy a cheap Buck knife or something.
