Hey guys. In the market for a new woods tool. I'm leaning more towards a machete or kukri, but if it's a useful hatchet i may want one. I only have 40$ (i've NEVER bought a 40$ knife) as a gift card, so it's what im limited to. Can you guys help me?

The Condor Kukri has gotten good reviews you can also find a Husqvarna hatchet for $40

Gerber makes several hatchets/axes- all within your price range

I have the sport axe ~ 15" in length and just over a lb in weight, pretty useful tool (especially teamed w/ a folding saw)

The Ka-Bar Kukri is about $40. 1085 steel, it's pretty heavy duty, about 11" long blade, and it's flat stock, till the hollow ground edge starts. Mine came razor sharp, and it's heavier than their Cutlass, which is a close design.

Any of the Condor machetes in that range ought to do nicely. :D:thumbup: The Husqvarna hatchet would be a good buy too, but I'm a bit biased in my preference. :p

Ontario 12 inch machete.

I spent a couple of hours yesterday clearing a pond dam of low hanging limbs and small trees. It cut right through limbs up to 1 inch with one stroke and made short work of a three inch sapling.

One of my favorite blades to just "play" with, clearing brush etc.

Excellent value for less than $25 just about anywhere.

It depends on your intended use...

My hatchet is the most useful wilderness tool I own. I have some larger knives that get left behind if I'm primarily concerned about bringing only the most functional tools. I love my big knives, but hatchets/axes can just get the job done...

I haven't used mine as much as I'd like to yet, but it is a great blade. The edge on mine did roll the first time I used it (hit concrete) but it came right out after a minute or 2 of stropping.

I just got a Kabar Cutlass, new in box) a few days ago for $42 shipped off ebay. Haven't had a chance to take it out yet, but it came shaving sharp and it feels very good in the hand. Having playing with machetes a bit in the past, I think that it's going to be a very good cutter for it's size.

A LOT of guys have Cold Steel tomahawks and get good use out of them. Likely around that price range. Get a cheap hawk, mod it, throw it, chop with it, whatever....it's all great fun. :D

Cold Steel spetsnaz shovel. I use mine for chopping (very well by the way), fire prepping (shaving fuzzsticks) , digging holes, drainage ditches, creekside clay beds for oven making, prepping food, gathering wood, and it can thrown (better than most of my tomahawks) for fun, or wielded like a weapon. A very light, inexpensive and tough multi use tool

well under your $40 budget too.
