I've been planning on trying out a new idea for a work rest and finally got a chance to use it today. I thought it might work well, but it really surprised me. It's like having a third hand. It greatly improved my grinds today.

Does anyone else use a post support like this?

I use it to support the spine of the knife when grinding bevels. With it being small and round you can rotate the blade at any angle along the horizontal plane allowing you to follow the curve of your profile, which you can't do very easily with a typical flat rest. I usually support the blade by setting it along my index finger, but with this support holding the blade I can use that hand to apply pressure wherever it's needed and you don't get any of the up and down chatter you some times get when applying a lot of pressure. Works really well.

I'll have to shoot some video when I get a chance.

Interesting! I've been thinking about building a narrow tool rest for that very reason--I like the REALLY narrow and rounded approach you took. Gives me some ideas... thanks for sharing!

The round tool rest is nice. I want to build one out of 2 inch steel tube. I just finished this small 2" x 3" rest yesterday. Larry

very nice, I am gonna try something like that! thanks for sharing

Okay, here is a little video showing the rest in action. The more I use this, the more I like it. It really is a great improvement over resting the spine along the edge of my index finger. No more rut rows when my finger bumps the belt and I can really bear down with my thumb against the blade when I need to. Maybe it's just the newbie in me, but I feel like I have much more control with this setup versus being totally freehand.

That's awesome! Now you gotta do a video showing how you made it! 😁

Great idea just make sure the gap between the rest and belt is smaller than the tip or any part of the spine. If not eventually it will slip into that gap and bad things could happen.

That is a truly great idea. I really like your hi-tech parts and the premium upgrade clamping system :)

I might take a piece of 1.5" or 2" round stock and make a heavy duty version on a dedicated tool arm.

I wonder if you could somehow attach a strong rare earth magnet to the bottom so you could manhandle it around where you need it and it could then be quickly detached...

The slipping between the belt can be a problem. I solved it by making a wider tool rest out of micarta and making a notch for the belt to run in. This puts the edge of the micarta past the edge of the belt on both sides but you have s flat rest not round like yours.

I haven't had any problems with the blade slipping between the rest and belt as the post is only 3/8 diameter and you can set it flush so that there is no gap at all. I even push the rest up against the belt when setting it and let the belt grind the end of the post so they match exactly. The post is just a 3/8"x 3" bolt with the hex head cut off, so it can be easily replaced if I manage to grind it down too much.
