I've done a search and looked through the threads and can't seem to find anything on the new Work Sharp guided sharpening system. I apologize if I've overlooked an existing discussion. I'm a newbie and if I'm going to collect knives, I need to know how to sharpen them. I've watched my friend do wonders to blades with the Sharpmaker and I'm relatively certain that with some practice, that I'm smart enough to eventually become at least somewhat proficient with it. That said, this new guided system has piqued my curiosity and I'm wondering if it's worth a try for only $60.00, not that I want to just toss that kind of money out the window. I have seen one very favorable review on YouTube from someone whose judgment I have faith in. I believe that it's only available through the Work Sharp website and a popular outdoor retailer's website at the moment. Have any of the more experienced folks here seen this new system and, if so, what are your thoughts?

My education continues. After some searching, reading, and watching a bunch of videos, I think I'm going to invest in a Wicked Edge sharpening system. I think the basic model will be more than sufficient for my needs and I can always add more stones.

GJ,

You are right that there doesn't seem to be much, if any, discussion here on the new Work Sharp manual system, the "Guided Sharpening System". I hope as people try it out there will be some info. and opinions posted. I am particularly interested in hearing what some of our folks think of the platform tilt feature.

The WEPS has many fans and I imagine you'll be happy with it. The biggest hurdle is the cost.

And welcome to BF. This is a great place to learn.

The Wicked Edge system obviously has a learning curve, but it appears to be as close to being idiot-proof as anything I've seen thus far. Manual dexterity has never been my forte. Thanks for the welcome.

I dont have the updated model with the tilt feature but I do have a couple of the older model manual work sharps I think they run around $30 now. I keep one in my truck and one goes in my pack if Im camping hunting hiking ... it actual does a great job to touch up blades with the ceramic rods and leather strop features ... Ive only once used the fine diamond to work on a bit duller knife and it worked fine its just a bit small... Id recommend it for a field sharpener or touch ups but I havent ever tried to use the coarser diamond side or to sharpen a truely dull knife ... I think for overall use Id look into something such as you mentioned the Wicked Edge or Apex or KME if you wanted a guided sharprner.

I purchased a WorkSharp recently and I'm really happy with it. Took a bit of practice to get a good edge, but not much. It also does serrated blades and scissors. My only beef is that it doesn't fare too well (in my brief experience) with knives that are dagger or bayonet ground or double-edged blades. It also doesn't do too well with very small blades - they seem to get kicked away from the belt.
