I know this isn't directly on-topic, but I'm just so happy I have to share. Starting at 7am this morning, the construction crew was working on my new shop building.

I'll be keeping a "photo diary" of sorts here.

They say they'll be done in about a week. Of course, that's when all the work starts. The list of stuff I have to do looks something like:

- Electrical (including pulling the 200A feeder from the house and trenching it in, all the shop interior electrical, etc)
- Lighting
- Building workbenches
- Installing forge chimney
- Build out office
- Insulate & put up wallboard (A.K.A. 1/4" MDF ;) )
- Decide on placement of the milling machine and get it moved
- Bring in the rest of the tools
- Set up stereo and Internet connectivity in the shop (I'm still a computer geek after all ;) )

So, I figure in 6-8 months I'll be good to go....*sigh*

Sweet!

My GF and I may be getting a nice house but it has a partial basement so I may be building a shop in the next year or two as well! I'll be interested to see what you come up with. I envision one of the walls on hinges, so I can open it up in nice weather and work with the fresh air blowing through the shop....

I feel your pain, I'm in the process of designing and preparing to build both house and a shop. Bad time down here to think about building so soon after Katrina, all the contractors are buisy.

Make sure you post finished results.

Tom: It's 30'x36', 12' eaves with a 10'x10' garage door and 1 man door. The extra height is in case I decide to install a lift for working on the cars. Right now the plan is to have a small office (12'x12' or so), a "machine shop" area, the forge area (10'x12' or so spot WITHOUT the concrete floor at one end of the shop), workbench area along one wall, and leave a bay open for "car stuff" for the future.

TikTok: Having an open-up wall would rock. I plan to cheat a little if I can and put A/C in my shop :)

Will: Can't even imagine trying to do that. My contractor lives about 1/4 mile down the road from me.

We are finishing our addition right now.
It is tons of work.
Good looking shop!

Have fun with that. I like my method better. You see, this way I keep working here at home to make the $$ to pay these fine neighbors of mine who are building the shop. From my perspective, the best part is making up the captions for the pictures. Keep checking up on the pics, they're being updated every 30-60 minutes... ;)

I'm bringing this back to the top so it'll be easier to find on Monday. I'm really enjoying the slide show :)

Great shop. It looks like you should have plenty of room to do whatever you want. The mill might need some oil though. :p

Well, the garage door went in today, so the builders are just about officially done. We still have to pour the floor, but I've decided that I'm probably putting in-floor radiant heat in, so the slab has to wait until I get the tubing for that figured out.

The excavator will be coming back to finish up the backs of the berms around the building and I plan to have him cut the trench for the electrical/water while he's here.

I've got a LOT more work to do, and you can expect pictures of it all :)

If you haven't thought of it yet, you might have the electrician put a high current 220V outlet on two different sides of the shop. This way if you decide to relocate things you won't have to run extension cords. A couple of 220V 20amp outlets come in handy for items like Variable frequency AC drives for grinders and Ovens!

Been there done that.

Jim,

That's in the plans for sure. One good thing is that all of the electrical is being done by a coworker who used to be an electrician and myself, so all I need to pay for is parts :D I'm also thinking that a few 220V outlets may get run under the floor for things like the milling machine and the spot where I plan to put a lathe, etc. The electrical will hopefully be as overbuilt as everything else on this one.

I won't be able to afford to pu anything in it once I'm done, but it sure will be pretty :)
