Some of the shots from the Northern Ithilien / Henneth Annûn series will be centered around streams and waterfalls, but mostly they will be shot in a cave. So that has meant a lot of experimenting with shooting in dark rooms lit only by candle light using shutter priority. This was the first time I had cooked an entire meal in a cave-like setting by candle light since I was seventeen years old...some time back, and I had never photographed it before. Though I did not have a fire, just a hot plate to simulate the open fire cooking techniques. I still have to work on some aspects before I am ready for the final sequence of shots, but it was fun. If I were still feeding myself and several other hungry homeless people, there wouldn't have been so much of the collard green stems in the discard basket, but fortunately that was not the case. The final sequence will have the stone walls of the cave as a back drop rather than the plywood barrier I used to set my max depth of focus in these, but some of the shots turned out ok. I had spent the last few days playing "beat the candle" and was running out of candles, so you can see how the lighting changes from the first pics to the last ones, and it was New Years Eve, and nowhere to buy more. I'm looking forward to the next go at it on a normal day with other meats and produce to play with more colors. The browns tend to blend and get lost in low light, I think I will definitely use the red potatoes next time around :)

Though it wouldn't have done them any harm, and Alayna would certainly have dug it as much as I would, I did not subject the family to cave dining :) We ate dinner at the dining room table and toasted the new year. These were just hurriedly taken camera pics. The meal was our traditional New Years Day meal of black eyed peas, seasoned collard greens, pork chops, fried potatoes, and corn bread :)

Well darn, I knew it wasn't like standing ovation worthy or anything, but crickets? Wow, I must be slipping lately.

It is excellent work, my friend. It is one thing to keep your family fed, and quite another to do so while engendering creativity and work ethic all in one go. This I congratulate and admire.

Thank you Jarrett. I'm getting older so I tend to feel the push to get some things done while I am still able...so I tend to combine as many endeavors as I can :)

Another great post with awesome pictures and the meal looks fantastic.

Thanks Tony, it didn't turn out bad at all. Getting there helped me maintain perspective on what define a good year or a bad one

Brian,

Trackrock. I vote that Justen makes the fried chicken/biscuit thingy he mixed up last time for breakfast.

And you do all the rest of the cooking.

I'll keep the fire going. Maybe roast a marshmallow. I can make you hot chocolate too. I'm very good at watching while you work. I'll just sit here and eat...

Oh Man I see ALL the major Necessary Food Groups; Pork, Potatoes, Shelled Peas, Greens, and something Like Johnny cakes!

That's elf bread.

Eleven waybread or Lembas. [emoji12]

Awesome thread Brian. I'm still trying to figure out how you're gonna get a table into a cave. If you need a hand let me know. I'll drive up. [emoji3]

Every one of these test shot threads gets me looking forward to the final project. I really can't wait. [emoji106]

Lol, thanks! I'll stick around this part of the country till after track rock anyway. I think I need that weekend around a campfire with friends.

Good eye man :)

In reality they are more akin to Rooster Cogburn's corn dodgers, but for my purposes just fried bread cooked in a cave over a fire :)

Yes and made with corn too!!!

Lol, Faramir is in awe of Galadriel, but has never been to Lorien, so that would work out.

The table top only will go, and be set up on Barrels. It's a big cave ;) I may take you up on the offer of help at some point though

I'm confused since I know pretty much zero about Trackrock including where it is. And since I've verbally, well via BF, committed to show up. Brian do you mean to say you're not going ?

No, the opposite. Its not far from me right now. But that will soon change I think

Great photos Brian! Working by candlelight must have been tricky. I look forward to the cave pics and the food looks delicious! I am sure you said it before but I missed what the end goal of these Tolkien inspired photo series is. I can see you have put a lot of time, effort and resources into them. Is there a possible book in the works? These are too cool to not share with a larger audience.

Thanks Todd! I am shooting a lot of different shots to figure out the best compositions for a calendar and a coffee table book if all goes well when I am finished.
