On New Year's Eve day I like to hit the woods for the last mountain bike ride of year but, as some of you may have heard, we had a little snow storm here in the tri-state area, so I had to break tradition if I wanted to get out. I decided to do a X-C ski with Skipper in the white stuff today.
Having read Tony's post, I knew I needed to dress light for this so all I wore was a wicking layer and long sleeve tee-shirt on top, and soft shell pants on the bottom. With the warm temps, the snow-pack compressed a bit and Skip was happy to be out. I even got Him to pose for some pictures:
We decided to make a fire just 'cause, so I tamped down the snow with my skis and found some tulip tree bark for a base. I used beech leaves (thanks for the tree i.d. Tony) for tinder and birch bark to extend the burn time.
The RC-4 is a good user, but it doesn't get out much because the handle is just too small for me.
After igniting 22 different tinders last month and winning Riley's November challenge, my hard steel rod was just about worn out, so to ignite the tinder I went old school and used matches. My skis are these big unwieldy 15+ year-old Fischer Country Crowns. I really need to upgrade one of these years!
We got about two feet of snow where I live and even with the warms temps as of late, it looks like it will be sticking around for a while.
Last week Skipper got to hang out in the woods with TonyM's dog, Woody. They got along great. Here are some bonus pictures of them:
