On New Year's Eve day I like to hit the woods for the last mountain bike ride of year but, as some of you may have heard, we had a little snow storm here in the tri-state area, so I had to break tradition if I wanted to get out. I decided to do a X-C ski with Skipper in the white stuff today.

Having read Tony's post, I knew I needed to dress light for this so all I wore was a wicking layer and long sleeve tee-shirt on top, and soft shell pants on the bottom. With the warm temps, the snow-pack compressed a bit and Skip was happy to be out. I even got Him to pose for some pictures:

We decided to make a fire just 'cause, so I tamped down the snow with my skis and found some tulip tree bark for a base. I used beech leaves (thanks for the tree i.d. Tony) for tinder and birch bark to extend the burn time.

The RC-4 is a good user, but it doesn't get out much because the handle is just too small for me.

After igniting 22 different tinders last month and winning Riley's November challenge, my hard steel rod was just about worn out, so to ignite the tinder I went old school and used matches. My skis are these big unwieldy 15+ year-old Fischer Country Crowns. I really need to upgrade one of these years!

We got about two feet of snow where I live and even with the warms temps as of late, it looks like it will be sticking around for a while.

Last week Skipper got to hang out in the woods with TonyM's dog, Woody. They got along great. Here are some bonus pictures of them:

Looks like a great time, thanks for sharing! Skis are a great way to get through the woods in the winter.

thanks for posting

they may be long and unwieldy, but no reason to burn them up :)

what's the pack your dogs are posing w/?

Great pics man, we had snow here too for a nice white Christmas but thankfully not two feet of it. For a hard rod I like the LMF Army models, I use those in classes and I have one that is half gone now after a year of relatively heavy use but it has started a LOT of fires. I think the next misch rods I order will be 0.5" diameter though because of them being so much softer and my sometimes using shavings off of them tinder in wet conditions.

Great pics Bro!

In the fire pic it looks like you are burning your skis, thats one way finding dry wood:thumbup::p

I'm not sure. It's TonyM's.

Thats a Snugpack Sleeka 35 (I have no clue if I spelled that right..)

Nice pics of the snow. You know down here in Florida it hit 70 yesterday. I contemplated going swimming. :D

Great pics! Nice day out the pooches too - good to keep 'em exercised. Yea, here in W-MI our snow is gone though we had some ultra-lite flurries today, but no accumulation.

Westchester County or Rockland? The lady and I got snowed in at my folks' house in Cortlandt Manor Xmas weekend, and when we got back to White Plains it was still a mess. Looks like you made the best of the snow, man!

Hmm, this reminds me that I have an old pair of XC Skis in the carport at my mom's house. I guess I ought to see if I can get my hands on em! :D
