Hi Neil I tried one a while back. Pop told me not to put them on the surface grinder. He said to try them after the blades come back from h-treat. I used the 50 grit on my prototype B-3 with an 8' drive pulley they ground a lot cooler than the 977. But after 45 or so blades I could not get it to track anymore. Darrel recomended try them at a slower speed that might be the ticket. I havent tried them since then since I got tons of the 977. Let me know what you come up with. Oh yea I think it is a ceramic similar to the 977. Call Pop for more info at 706-678-5409 Well back to work take care GenO

I just ordered belts from pops this week. 3m 977 ceramic hoggers in 40, 80 and 120, 220 regalites, and then 310 and 600 trizacts.

Neil,
I tried them awhile back and didn't care for them. Decided to try it again. I'll let you know what I think second time around.
I love the 3M 977 belts. The yellow, 967 I think, costs a little more.

I think I'll just stick with the 977's
I someone had said "YES, I LOVE the yellow belts, I might have given them a try. Thanks everyone you probably just saved me $$$$$$$!!

Neil: Well, I love the damn things!! I like the feel they give, compared to the 977 belts. they are awesome in 6 x 48 on the metal platen for flat grinding. I don't grind fast, or with high pressure, and these belts just seem to work better than the 977's for me.
Pop will sell you a few-what have you got to lose-try 'em!!

Randy,
My grinders are built to run 108"X2" belts. I have a to place a special order for them. I get quite a few FREE, slightly used finsishing belts in this size from my full time job that actually makes this worthwhile!!
I might be able to get a "test" belt made from 3M. With all their products I go through both in my shop AND at my full time job, I think that's the least they could do

Yes I have Neal
I love um . I dont grind with much pressure.
They last much longer in my shop. They cut much faster and cleaner. This may vary from one maker to the next. They cut titanum much better also.
Pop said they changed the bonder in them to release the ceramic grit easier. The orange belt take more pressure to do the same job. That is all the difference in them from what he said. This makes it them an ideal belt for folks who dont use high pressure to grind and also for those who flat grind on a platen.
I have not tried hollow grinding with them.
I do use them to rough flat grind blades and profile titanium.
Asfor norton hoggers I dont use them.

Darrel,
Thanks for your feedback! I guess it really does depend on what each individual maker uses them for etc. This thread has been MUCH more iformative than talking to 3M though

I mainly hollow grind D2, Talonite and now Stellite. A2 is easy for me to grind with just about ANY belt!! I use 36 grit 977's to taper tangs against a platten.
I have a call into 3M to try to get a single custom belt in the 50 grit.
I will report back regarding MY feelings towards the yellow belts!!

I've been using the Cubitron (3M yellow belts) on 420V and 3V...both flat and hollow grinds. For the speeds and pressures that I use in grinding they seem to last longer and give a more uniform finish. I usually keep both the yellow and orange belts in the shop but I find lately that I use the yellow belts 75% of the time...I love 'em

Cecil,
I HAVE to try them! I'm going to bite the bullet. NO more FREE 108" belts from work

I'm going to convert both my grinders back to 72" belts while I'm off over the Christmas week. I guess I'll be getting to know Pop rather well as I will be ordering a complete, NEW inventory of belts

I won't even be able to use my favorite, broken in finishing belts, this $U(ks !!!

Pops is awesome! I got my belts from him and used them and the grizzly today. I got 40 and 80 grit ceramics, 120 grit, 1 ceramic, 2 regalites, 220 regalites and 320 and 600 trizacts. Those trizacts look really cool! I like the orange color of the other belts.

Cecil,
The problem with the free belts is that I'm limited to JUST the free ones or a custom order through 3M. There is a 50 belt minium to have the 108" belts made. This cost's $300+ for each grit AND the belts take up quite a bit of room in the shop

I already have 2 HUGE boxes of Norton belts that are useless!!
I'm already in the process of making two shorter arms for my grinders.

Well, I got to grind again today with the orange 977 from 3m and I was brave enough to use the trizacts. I actually got my first belt edge cuts with my grizzly, but fortunetly not with the trizacts! 40 grit and 80 grit 977 hurt pretty good, though! Also, got a few more burns on the fingers and hand. I love Knifemaking!!! Dr. Lathe, I have pops catalog if you need the prices of the belts.

Taz,
Thanks for the offer, I already have a call in to Pops! I also orderd a small selection of 72 inchers from Sheffields.
Starting all over from NOTHING as far as a belt selection SUCKS!! You know how you have the "special ones" that are JUST RIGHT?? 108" belts last a LONG time too. Mine will soon be in the garbage. The good news is that I found a way to splice the Trizact belts with a minimum HUMP at the splice. I wouldn't even think about splicing a belt that would run at high speed!!
