Going to New York City for Thanksgiving. Does anyone know the laws about carrying a Busse downtown. Should I just leave em in the hotel and just get a throw away folder, or is there one I can carry and not worry. Most likely I cannot get away with as much as here in Dallas, will be doing some of the stupid tourist stuff, and just wondering what type of security to expect at the Empire State bldg----etc....

Sorry buddy.....No cowboy in town. I don't believe you can bring a fixed on street. For folder gotta be 4in blade under. No Auto, No Bali. Assis might be ok.

That is what ppl have told me. But you might want to check more source. If i am right about No fixed.....Yes, NYC is not Busse friendly.

If you are gonna be touring.....don't bring any blade at all....its trouble. Even a tiny swiss army on keychain will be taken. Its trouble. Nothing you can do about it, and you will be upsad. So my suggestion, don't carry them.

I went there one summer and packed my benchmade auto everywhere I went. Even in the towers, but abviously this was before 9/11

I travel to NYC often, and I'm pretty sure that the law there is that:

knives where the blade is 4 inches or over are prohibited. Fixed & folding.
daggers are prohibited. (Double edged knives of any length.)
gravity knives are prohibited- and in NYC, this means any knife which can be flicked open with one hand.
And switchblades are out.

Also, knife must be concealed. So don't even show the pocket clip.

_______________

So when I travel to NYC, I carry an Endura - can't be flicked open & blade is less than 4 inches.
Also carry a fixed blade my shoulder bag ( again, blade is under 4 inches. But not by much.)

I was up the Empire State Building about two weeks ago. They have full metal detectors and empty your pockets rules now. I knew something like that was in affect so I didn't bother carrying my Swiss Army.

Oh, right, this is a really good point.

Many, many buildings in NYC now have metal detectors and security guards at the ready. Not just famous buildings, but office buildings too.

So definitely be aware of that.

Another thing is that there are police all over the place. In cars, walking around, in uniform, plainclothes - the city is packed with police. And all different kinds - Traffic Police, Port Authority Police, NYPD police, NYC Parks Police...others too. A lot of eyes.

P, you would be wise to leave them home!. Even flying today , with all the delays, check points, restrictions and worst of all baggage loss.
And N.Y. is a 4" limit but it is at the discretion of the officer at the time. If you don't look right , he or she will confiscate it.

The metal detectors and stuff can sneak up on you. We were down in STL in May and we took my little guy to the arch. I didn't think anything about security or anything. We got down in the bottom there and I realized what we were heading for. I told the Park Service Cop I was carrying a knife. He says let's see it. I hand him my Rat Trap, he opens it, looks at it, closes it and gives it back. Go on through he says, I about crapped! I thought for sure it was a goner. They did indicate a specific restriction for Kershaws with the assisted opening feature. Kind of silly that restriction, I can flip that RT open pretty darned fast, maybe not as fast as the speed safe feature, but fast enough. I am sure the pass was due to me being with my little boy and wife and I didn't look threatening, especially in my Utilikilt. :D

I kinda look like a real young version of Osama Bin Laden----------which means I should probably leave everything at home.---Oh well--I guess I will just carry my old childhood friend,-----the old pocket rock. At this point it has what looks to be a small swedge on the front of this round piece of nature.-------round-------front????????

Hi pekiti589-
"...I kinda look like a real young version of Osama bin Laden..."
First of all, change your appearance. Nobody should wish to appear similar to Osama bin Laden, and especially around New York, Pennsylvania, or Washington, D.C. You might be a decent American, but you will receive more extensive "examination" when touring Big Apple tourist sites. You can choose to carry a small cheapie folder with the knowledge that there are metal detectors virtually everywhere. Office buildings, some theaters, sports arenas, museums, and obviously airports are all prime locations where you could be refused entry. It's kind of difficult to find a convenient hiding spot for your knife when you're standing on the corner of Broadway and 34th Street. Good luck with your visit.

I was in NYC about 3 years ago. I went to the Empire State building. I handed them my SAK, lockblade (I think it was a BM Minigriptilian), and my pepper spray. They said they would keep it until I was down and handed me a ticket. It was not a busy evening. Maybe I got favored treatment. The officer or gaurd looked impressed by my folder. I think he thought like me. So he may have shown extra care...???

I was in St Louis last fall at the arch they also held my Benchmade minigrip and pepper spray until I was done in the museum area. I was with my wife and our four kids. Again this was a rather slow weekday evening. Not busy.

However, in DC a few years ago, they did not have a "storage option". If I wanted to go in I could deposit my knife in the trash. Yeah right. I let my family go into the museum, I walked on the mall for a while. I don't know what DC city laws are but you can't go into a museum with your "friends".

I live on Long Island, where I don't encounter many metal detectors, but when I go to the city I still carry a folder -- I just find a place to discretely stash it outside whatever building I'm entering. when I went to the Empire State Building last year, I left my Benchmade inside one of those large decorative planters that most buildings have outside or in the lobby. Note that I didn't bring my Sebenza, just in case it was confiscated/stolen. If you behave yourself, you won't be hassled just because of a visible pocket-clip -- but still, keep it to a sub-4" blade.

Another long islander here. Until February I worked in NYC and carried a Benchmade folder everywhere I went. Heed the 4" rule.

I live in NY. Any folder that can be opened by gravity is illegal. Even if it can be opened held by the blade that counts. I carry a fixed blade a touch under four inches. Botom line if the cop likes your knife he will keep it. My advice is don't carry a blade you cannot afford to lose. On the other hand the chances of anyone searching you are slim to none unless you ask for it. Dont carry anything over four inches if you are visiting public buildings.

See I wouldn't have been surprised with a deposit ticket type deal, but the guy just handed it back to me and let me go in. :D
