On the advice of "experts" people are buying rolls of duct tape - no idea of just what to do with it, but the "experts" said to have lots handy in the event of a terrorist attack, so folks are buyng it.

Lots of bottled water being sold too: suddenly there are no more supermarket sales. I've seen adds for stores selling new "protection" gadgets - radiation detectors, chemical warfare protection gear, Chinese Army surplus gas masks......

Lots more uniformed police on the streets and in the subways, but no clear idea of just what they - or we - are supposed to be looking for. I heard one news report suggesting that guys with razor cuts might be suspicious since they could be Muslim men who have just shaved off their beards.....

Any other New Yorker's out there who get the same sort of strange vibes fromall this?

You are supposed to buy plastic sheets and duct tape to seal up your windows in case there is a chemical attack.

People are also advised to keep plenty of food and bottled water in the house. This way, if the air and water is tainted, you can hole up at home for a couple of days.

The train system is inherently impossible to protect from a terrorist attack. What are you supposed to do, check everyone who enters the railway system? So, the best they can do is put a bunch of LEOs at every station while placing them on high alert.

The problem with NYC is that there is a high concentration of middle eastern and near eastern neighborhoods where a lot of terrorists can reside undetected. Also makes NYC a very easy target.

Bust out the gas mask, oakley googles and rubber gloves.

Business as usual.

I think I am going to find myself a cave near vikingswordsman and live in the wild lands of Canada.

The problem with a NBC attack is that as a civilian, you have no idea what's going on till it's too late.

Minimum standards as listed in the SMCT (Soldier's Manual of Common Tasks) are 8 minutes to go from unprotected to Mopp 4 (which is full chemical gear). Trained individuals can do so in a matter of 2 minutes, but untrained individuals can take up to 15 minutes.

Most NBC filters can last up to 24 hours, but if the filters are exposed to air before it's needed, effectiveness can be reduced to almost nil. Acid gases will eat through said filters in 5 to 10 minutes...

In many civilan as well as military situations, the only indication you are being attacked by gas is when you see people around you dropping dead. By then, it is too late to don your mask.

effects of Bio and Radioactive material attacks will not be noticeable until long after the attack.

Taping up your windows and doors will barely keep out a draft. It will not keep chemical agents from seeping in.

Should one survive the initial attack, most will not have decontamination training or facilities. Contamination is almost as deadly as the initial attack.

As Sundsvall said, the only effective way of avoiding a terror attack is to go somewhere the terrorists won't want to attack. However, I'd like to see the terrorist do some real damage... especially to the anti-war peacenick deluded morons out there.

Just by coincidence, I was going to paint my apartment this weekend so I had thick gauge tarps and drop cloths in the house anyway. I've always had plenty of duct tape, as well.

BUT, having this on hand in case of a terrorist attack is kinda like putting a Band-aid on a sucking chest wound. I've honestly come to think that the biggest terrorists are the media.

My head's spinning quicker then Linda Blair's right now,
from all of this crap being reported.

All I can say is that we all have to chill out and stick together.

I think the best reason to have a few days of food and supplies on hand is to avoid having to go out and get such items while all the chicken little's are running around stocking up on AA batteries.

Really if you don't have a weeks worth of food and water on hand you are simply an idiot. Its not like you don't use the stuff on a daily basis.

A Chemical attack on your home is very unlikely. I think if I used a subway or worked in a high profile office building I would have the means to seal my office or put on a gas mask. Avoiding a biological weapon is a matter of immunization and quarentine. Mac

Hey SpecialK-

As I figured, only a fellow New New Yorker would get it....keep cool, my brother!

Maury,

You stay cool as well and stay the hell away from CNN. They're reporting too much crap and are basically telling us nothing.

Take care,
Al

IMO, the whole stocking up on duct tape/tarps and food/water is analgous to the duck and cover drills that were popularized during the Cuban missile crisis. It gives us civilians something "productive" to do besides stand around and poop our shorts when something evil this way comes.

As melancholymutt says clearly, by the time you know something is happening, it's too late.

Anyone up for a trip to Hawaii? ;)

I think that Michael Jackson is the only one with the proper air filtration systems in his home.

Hey Maury,

I didn't know that I represented the Midwest. Cool.

Sooooo: According to this evening's news, seems that the reason we are on 'Orange Alert," at cost to us New York City taxpayers of thousands of overtime hours for additional police, tens of thousands of man-hours lost by "security delays" at bridges and tunnel, the reason for all this is that some guy in a slammer - one single guy somewhere - made up a story about a possible cell of terrorists who might maybe detonate what could be a possibly dirty bomb possibly in New York City or maybe Miami or ........

Hey SpecialK:

Did find good use for all that duct tape after all: used it to secure several emergency liters of bourbon to reserve bags of pretzels, all cashed in strategic locations around apartment; also stockpiled in a reserve supply of ice cubes in the shape of ninja throwing stars! Let 'em try messing with this New Yorker!

Are you also wondering who's running the asylum?

This is exactly what terrorism is all about. It's not about how many people they can kill. It's all about changing lifestyles and having people living in fear. Just think about how many extra people that have been allocated and all the extra $$$ that have been spent since 9/11. They didn't just accomplish taking down the Trade Center and killing thousands of people. They have changed the way we live for an unknown period of time. I hate the fact that those pricks died when the planes crashed. They went to f*cking easy.

Duct tape and tarps are for replacing your windows or walls if they are taken out in an explosion. Remember that shelter is your #1 survival requirement (that you can do something about)

Hey Maury,

Sorry I didn't respond quicker. I was busy getting the wife 4 gallons on Poland Spring and myself 3 liters of Jack Daniels. The water's still here, but now I'm down a liter on the Jack! :D

We all know who's running the asylum, but he's probably in Bermuda somewhere right now having drinks with the CEO's of the duct tape and drop cloth companies, laughing their asses off!

Al

Hey Al-

Bermuda, huh? Wasn't there something on the news 'bout Mayor B heading south this weekend? Coincidence? I think not!! Methinks there's conspiracy afoot! I call for a Congressional Investigation into the International Duct Tape Cartel!

Meantime, lets not forget the tactical value of alcohol when used against them tea-totalling raghedz! A Supersoaker loaded with grade A 86 proof can cut a nasty swath! Safeguard that reserve bottle!

Ps: I am using the last of mine to patch up a leak in my still.

We New Yorker's are an awesome lot!
