Are there any unique "American" experiences I should partake in ??

:p

I think Guiliani cleaned it all up. :(Times Square that is.)

Lady Liberty is pretty interesting and Ellis Island was worth the ferry ride to me. I would head to Long Island and check out some of the beach down there. Pretty cool.

My wife and I were there in November of 2000 I think. There is one place we didn't go, I wish we had, but we got a nice picture of it from the ferry to Lady Liberty. Wish I could find the picture, but we have seen enough of it on TV so maybe it is best I can't find it.

Enjoy your trip.

Go see the Yankees. Don't be afraid to use the subway. My wife and I use it all the time and it is quite nice and cheap too. If you do end up using the subway, buy a one week pass card the first day. It will cost around 20 US dollars but will save you greatly in the long run. The Craft Bar is one great restaurant in lower Manhattan. Zabar's up near 72nd and Broadway is our favorite grocery. Bring your appetite. I don't know if it is uniquely American but, I insist that you try a sabrette (gourmet hotdog) sold by one of the numerous street vendors in the city. Absolutely fantastic! Go see the Empire State Bldg. It is worth the approx 30-45 minute wait to get to the top. Carmine's is up near 83 or 86th street. Really good Italian. Bring lots of friends with you if you go there because it is truely a feast. Lots to see and do. Especially fun is to walk all around Time Square at night. The sights are the best part. Unless you really like theatre, Broadway sucks. It is over rated. Save your money for something else. Paragon Sports in lower Manhattan for knives. They are not cheap there, though. John's Pizza right near Times Square is in an old redone church. Really nice atmosphere and great brick oven pizza too. So much more to see and do. Oh yeah for a really cheap but good boat ride, take the Staten Isle Ferry that departs near Battery Park. Ride over and back. Buy a gift for your mom. Get her the latest style hand bag. You will see them being sold all around T. Square at night. Use your bargianing power. They will come way down in price. Be courteous though and have the money you expect to spend already out of your wallet. Don't pull your wallet out to fish out your cash. That is inviting disaster. Watch your back. You are only a victim if you are unaware. Stay alert and have a great time.

if i want a nice souvenir what would you chaps recommend !

I have a boomerang from OZ and I want something that is truly american !!

Maybe a nice american football or something - what is a good price for such things ?

how about taking a look at 9-11 ground zero? that is what i would like to see up close, also the statue of liberty, and where is the smithstonian, there or in washington?

The Smithsonian is in DC.

I would second going to ground zero. I went there last year. No words will convey. It is something you have to see.

Hey Brendan, have fun while your over on the East Coast! :D You should be able to get an American foot ball for less than $20 in a good sporting goods store. VolleyBall was my sport so don't quote me on it.;) lol. My main sugestion is to take in all the sights that you can and take lots of pictures. Enjoy your trip!

Voracious is in Jersey I think.

Gotta be some hogs in New York.

Yes, go see Ground Zero. Talk to the natives.

Something truely American, buy a Busse!!!

Thanks for all the help chaps !!

Will be back next week !

:D

Not sure that I qualify as a hog as I own only 6 Busse's, and 2 of them are not INFI.

As a native NYC'er suggest:

Some great museums including the Museum of Natural History.

Try Chinatown in Manhattan. Some very authentic Chinese food.

2nd - 3rd? - that the site, where the WTC was, is worth seeing.

Ride on the Staten Island Ferry is inexpensive and interesting.

Lots of good music around.

Send me an e-mail, and I'll give you my phone #, in case you need some info while you're here.

Brendan

It may be too bulky, but consider a basketball for your American souvenier.

I suggest this because Basketball is the only sport I'm aware of that has its origins ONLY in America (Indianna to be precise).

Maybe you can get one and deflate it for packing....

hey, brendan!
nyc is a great vacation! many of my friends go there for afew days or a week at a time!
day trips too of course! the BEST damn food; chinatown and little italy are too close together, not enough walking to regain your appetite.

my favorite bars are hogs-n-heifers in the meat packing district
and red rocks saloon. unfortunately i don't have addresses but i'm sure they're online.
for a unique experience, party all night then go to the blue ribbon diner at 1 or 2 am for an astounding 5 star feed. my fave is this huge, 5 tiered cold seafood dealie. raw oysters(choose from up to 10 varieties) lobster, crab, shrimp top tier is caviar and 4 shots of ice cold stoli vodka. i suppose that means it's supposed to be for more than one
for a great day at the beach, you can catch a ferry to highlands, nj and jump on a trolley(ok, it's a bus that looks like a trolley) for about a dollar to sandy hook, one of the best fishing and swimming spots around. very cool because it's a narrowspit of sand about 5 miles long, ocean on one side, bay on the other.

i'm 17 miles as the gull flies from lower manhattan.
drop me an email if you like.

oh, yeah, go to an irish pub in your mick-hatin red shirt and speak loud and clear...that'll get you a nice souvenir!!!
lol
just kiddin'

WOW - what a trip !!

I love New York, most memorable bits include whispering corners at grand central station, ground zero, driving into new york over the washington bridge (what a view), staten ferry and all the sexy ladies - new york is full of tottie !!

I got myself a wilson leather american football and an official major league baseball in a nice presentation box as well as many clothes, some nice comics but didn't find any busses (was going to say any decent knives but I somehow battle to say anything but the word busse when talking about knives)

I want to see more of the states now, Ive been bit by a serious travelling bug !!

Thanks for all the help fellas !!!

Brendan, welcome back! :D Glad you had a great time. I know this nice quiet spot out west with lots of hot girls. ;) :D
