New York inferno sparked by amateur bladesmith

A perfectly newsworthy story was delegitimized by a reporter who was apparently trying to imitate the style of reporting he's seen on TV. The damage to the reputation of the Associated Press as a result of this story depends on too many factors to predict. This story reduced the complex mix of psychology and experience that influences and inspires one to pursue a new hobby to "something he saw on TV".

Is it reasonable to suppose that this reporter believes that had the gentleman never seen the show he would never have attempted to forge steel tools. I think opinionated news reporting is more dangerous to our society than amateur hobbyists.

"Do not try this at home" is not a deterrent...it's a dare.

Proof that disclaimers are completely ineffective:
Laws (always seem to be written in the style of Shakespeare for some reason)
Religion (anything beginning with "Thou shalt not")

Other notable and ineffective warnings...

You'll shoot your eye out. (BB Gun)
You will summon demons. (Bloody Mary chant and Ouija Board)
You'll go blind and have hairy palms. (Flogging Dolphin, Spanking Monkey, Choking Chicken)

Sorry I just posted this on Whine and Cheese before I saw yours .
As a forum metallurgist he could have asked me as I live in NY also. And Sam Salvati [ also from NY will be embarrassed too ]. They'll probably show the video at all future
Ashokan meetings ! :(:(
Don't try this at home without expert's assistance !

AB-SO-FREAKING-LUTELY!!!! But what do you expect when an industry's most prestigious award is named after Joseph Pulitzer.

We've always had BS media, it is called tabloids.

Seems like these days 95% of stories are just tabloid. Major companies try to defend their credibility, "this is investigative unbiased journalism, we report the truth!" As if the media has something implicit about it that makes it unbiased. I still remember my teacher telling me in 5th grade, "All true news stories should be unbiased, just the facts. Separate opinion pieces."

Sorry guys, the media is not implicitly trustworthy. Rather the media seems to be more and more implicity be tabloid.

sharp_edge sharp_edge He is training to become a master shiv maker in lockup.

Click bait journalism seems to be the new norm.

Did anyone actually read the linked article? The writer didn't express any noteworthy opinion. The assigned motive of copying a TV show was quoted from a local official. The title wasn't "click bait." It was entirely objective: "Mayor: New York inferno sparked by amateur bladesmith." The journalist wrote a perfectly acceptable article by any reasonable standard.

You guys have managed to knee-jerk yourselves into discussing politics in GKD for no reason whatsoever. o_O It's pretty ironic.
