Hey Fellas,

I'm coming to the Rockefeller Center area next week with my wife on some business. Anyone know of good knifeshops or cool stores in the area? I know of Paragon on 18th and Barrett-Smythe on 69th, but are there any others?

We're thinking about going to check out the Intrepid museum and seeing Cats at the Winter Garden theatre.

Also any cool clubs in the area that play Alternative/Idustrial music?

My wife also want's to know if any of your ladies or the ladies here, know of any good vintage clothing shops.

This will be my first time there, so any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

New York City isn't a great town for knives, unfortunately, in any shape or form. But the Intrepid is a good day trip, well worth it.

AS for vintage clothing, you can try Unique Boutique which is on Broadway around 4th street...there are a few vintage places in and around that area, and Greenwich Village is always a fun place to walk around.

When in town, get a Village Voice newspaper. They have a pretty good listing of the clubs and vintage stores and fun things to do.

Not many up there. Although Paragon Sports use to carry a few good fixed blades. Phil will have to confirm if they still do.

You may want to chect out the METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART. They had a really nice collection of swords and armour.

OWL, I've seen my name mentioned a few times, and I've been trying to think of some way to help you. The fact is I don't have a good knife shop to send you to, I wish I did. As far as the other stuff goes I don't have a clue, not my type of music and I don't buy used clothes. Sorry Dude!

MB, no doubt that the biggest selection of high end and customs are at Paragons. Be sure to bring your house deed! Downtown on Broadway is Iceberg of Soho Army and Navy store with a large collection of productions but with full retail price tags. They also feature full line of military clothing, lighters, ammo cans, boots, patches, pins, cordura carry bags, and lots of other related stuff. They are located just outside of Chinatown. Their annual income from sales is phenomenal... thank you tourists!

Only a few blocks up still on Broadway is the perennial Canal Jean Company. Vintage clothes? Can you say stretch polyester and checkerboard pattern pants? Mostly in the basement. Better ask for a map of the place as it is a huge building.

Broadway from Canal St. towards 14 St. Union Square is a fantastic strip. You could spend half the day there. Say hello to Jane Seymour, Jason Bates, Drew Barrymore, Eli Wallach and whoever else you may bump into.

Have fun, but don' t look at your watch when someone asks for the time!

I cant really add to what was said already except that, as a knife guy you will be far better served at the metropolitan rather than the intrepid. THey have armour and knives and swords from several different cultures and periods. Much japanese (sp) stuff. Way cool to look at. YOur wife will indeed enjoy broadway around canal jean. Just wander around over there and you will come across alot of "different" types of stores. Loads of fun ! Knife shops in an urban highly liberal city are few and far between and besides the ones you already mentioned most of the others are selling knockoff junk.

Nakano, I grew up in NY and never heard the watch advice. Please enlighten me...

Owl, the guys are right. Unless you own a bank, the only 2 are Paragon and Barret Smyth Gallery and out of reach.
Unless you happen to be in town on the Wednesday of the month that Empire Knife Club meets in Brooklyn. They have a swap meet after the meeting.
BTW, if you're driving up 11th Ave at night those girls waving at you are not just being friendly.

Hey, lifter do you go to the Empire meetings?
There's one coming up on the 12th. Rugger and I went to the last one, (Nakano stood us up) I just got an e-mail from yitz, he attends once in a while. We saw Frank Recupero there, they are areal nice bunch.

I live in Westchester, but work in NYC. Yes, I'm one of those a "gasp" commuter.

Once, on 11th Ave, I overheard one tourist comment to another...
"My that woman has big feet"
So there I am, with beer coming out of my nose!
NY, just like I pictured it, skyscrapers & EVERYTHING
