Is there a law in New York making it illegal to carry a Spyderco. Read today where one of the knife shops is no longer shipping Spydercos to New York.

Been around for a while that New York has been really hard on any knife that can be opened one handed, they will also prosecute any dealer or manufacturer that ships to New York or something like that. Search and google is your friend.

That sucks. I have been pulled over by DOT police a few times. I work in CT,MA and NY on the weekly basis.
Both times in the last year. I was carrying a spyderco para mili. Then again. I was pulling a trailer with a truck full of material. So he knew it was my work tool.
One stop was in Catskill and another about 20 miles west of NYC.
No issues.

These laws only pertain to the five Burroughs of NYC. Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Staten Island, and the Bronx. The rest of NYS has seperate laws for knife carry.

A lot of people do not understand this and assume that these laws pertain to all of NYS. Mail that is not going to one of the five Burroughs usually does not get processed within NYC so there is no need to worry when living outside of this area. I wish more dealers would take the time to understand this because they are losing customers that they don't need to lose. I guess it's just easier to say will not ship to NY instead of will not ship to NYC.

Not true, it is based off the DA and Judges interpretation of the definition on New York State law of what a gravity knife is. It is only being Interpreted this way in the 5 boroughs, but the precedent is there for other counties in NY to take advantage of this.

I can see the new DA of Nassau county enforcing this after seeing her recent bust on gun shops of what her interpretation of an assault rifle is.

This is why you need to support lobby groups like the NRA and knife rights to fight this

Same laws but interpreted differently. As long as your not in those areas you'll be fine.

It has nothing to do with the mail. Perfectly legal AND safe for me to mail you a tactical knife in NYC. The Manhattan DA has absolutely no access to the US mail.

The problem is, NYC is capable of making a straw purchase from a big dealer, then sending their lawyers after him when he sends the knife to them. That's why dealers can't trust NYC sales.

Reality stinks sometimes. :(

Exactly why I'm a card carrying member of kniferights.org.

Here we go again. Do a search here. This topic has been beaten to death and then some.

Unless you are going through New York City you shouldn't have much to worry about (yet).

I live in New York City, and today I was at Paragon Sports. They had a number of Spyderco folders in stock and on display.

However, just because you purchased a small knife from a local shop doesn't mean the police (or judge) won't interpret the poorly worded law such that you are not a criminal. Though I know of many people who carry, hoping common sense will prevail.

Recent local story: 'Knife-wielding' painter artfully dodges weapons charge (google cache)

If you carry a fixed blade under 4", and keep it concealed you will in theory be avoiding the ambiguously worded portions of the law that pertains to locking folders.

I was at Paragon again today looking for some random stuff, and took a peek at the knives again. They do have a number of locking blades; I asked the sales person and he said as long as they aren't "assisted opening" they are allowed to sell them.

They had some HIGH end ones that locked. The Spydies are all non locking......Their meeting with the DA ended in an agreement to stop selling "flickable" folders not just AOs. That said they continued to sell the high end stuff ever since they were raided last June....
