Late last night I picked up my new ZT 0566. Got home with it about 11:30 PM and opened the box. It was the hardest knife to open I have purchased in years. I have many flippers and assisted knives but this one was a problem. Found I could not go to sleep without looking into why. I'm anul like that. Wife agrees, but not the time to go into that.

Would flip open but was a killer on the finger. When the knife was open I noticed that the pocket clip was still making contact with the frame lock. This was exerting more pressure on the blade in the closed position then I feel is necessary. Went to remove the clip and one of the screws was loose and had no loctite. The other was tight and had loctite.
Check all screws on any new knife.
Looked at the clip and the mounting surface of the clip was not parallel with the clip that shows outside your pocket. Use duck bill pliers and fixed that issue. Now the clip is about .005 above the lock bar. I don't like it so tight that you need allot of pull to remove it from your pocked. It also wares out the pants.

Put a small amount of my favorite oil on each side ot the pivot.
The next thing I did was putting a wooden wedge between the lockbar and the frame on the underside when the knife is open. This removes any pressure from the lockbar and the blade. At this point the blade should have little to no resistance from the pivot screw. The blade was way to snug in this area. Backed off on the pivot until the blade fell on it own without any side play.
The jimping was biting a little to much so I addressed that with a 1/4" round ceramic stone which still gave a good surface against slipping but did not make it uncomfortable. My last thing for the night was to change it to a tip down carry. This also took the pressure of the clip off the frame lock and put it on the frame.
The knife now opens the way I feel it should. These few adjustments made all the difference in the world.
Oh yea! Did strop a bit on 1/2 then 1/4 micron diamond spray. Hairs fly off the arm.
This is a knife that I would reccomend to anyone looking for a tough edc that is not to big. ( I have the 0550 and 0551)
I hope when you get yours that you don't have to go through these steps to be satisfied with a knife that retails for $180.00.

I just got mine as well and it has become my favorite folder. Had to add some grease it up a bit but its very nice. Found it online for about $120

The 566 has become my EDC since I got it several weeks ago...replacing my beloved 585 with Amboyna scales from Cuscadi...it will now be my "dressy" knife.
I always disassemble every knife I buy before using it...I also polished the washers, liners and blade area that contacts the washers with 2000 wet/dry...a little BM Blue and some pivot adjusting and it flies. I also added some jimping to the flipper...much better finger contact when flipping it.
This is a really nice knife...very happy I bought it.

Also like to see your jimping on the flipper. Tonight I skeltonized the liner under the G10 a bit. Two 7/16" holes. Looking to drop the weight due to the stainless.

I was thinking about that too. Do you think it made a difference?

Kai Winters.
Nice mod on the jimping. I also take each knife apart when I receive it. The washers I finish on a strop for that high polish. Go over the whole knife.

Nice jimping mod. I'm saving up for a ZT 0566 (taking forever :(), I am one of the few that likes the fact it has a steel frame lock lol

Final adjustments to this knife was completed today. I felt that the assisted opening was making my finger sore. (to tight IMO ). I made a slight adjustment to the torsion spring or bar and now it is much easier to operate. Works well every time and no more sore finger trying to overcome the strong preload on the blade. I also removed some more material from the SS below the G10. The skeletonizing has removed 1 5/8" of material. Now it should get some pocket time.

Well done rpttrsn...
I've removed some material from the frame lock side of the liner...used my Dremel and a metal grinding stone...it worked well but not very pretty. I'm considering drilling some holes, starting with the non frame lock side...to lighten the knife.
I really like carrying this knife.
Post some pics...we all want to see the mods...also what bits, tools, etc. you used.

I used a drill press and cobalt drill bits. ( 7/16" for 2 lg. holes and 3/16 for 4 sm. holes) Counter sunk the holes to remove any burs and stoned lightly. The spring was bent ever so slightly at the curve in the middle (bottom) which moved the top hook closer to the left in the open position. This took some of the preload off when the blade is closed. It is much better then when I received it. It will take a second place to my Spyderco Brad Southard in my flippers.

Interesting.

Did this change make the AO action stronger or weaker?

With not as much tension on the spring it has decreased the speed slightly opening. Let me point out that it required quite a bit of pressure to activate the flipper. Much more then I consider normal. The knife opens well now, every time with no sore finger. I can tweak the spring to add a bit more tension if I wanted. It doesn't need much. I am quite happy with the force that the knife opens as it is. Has a good snap.
