New ZT factory special series revealed….

Saw that yesterday, but without a pic of the knife - just the announcement, and was wondering what it would be. Yeah, I'll pass on that.

I love my ZTs but they haven't put out any models recently that have excited me. Now, if they released a really sweet ltd edition version of the 0770, I might get excited. Probably my favorite ZT design ever, and one that seems to stay under the radar for most.

I’d love if ZT did what Spyderco has with its CQI program. Improving existing knives in their line up, even bring back some discontinued models with improvements. I would love to see a 0770cf with KVT bearings, a 0566 with KVT and a titanium lock side. The 0357 is a good knife just needs to ditch the speedsafe. Update the 0350 series as well.

So much yes on the 0770CF KVT. Elmax, M4, or 20CV.

I think it looks kind of neat.
My gripe with copper is that it scratches so easily, but the scratches combined with patina over time is probably what the idea is.
Looks a tad plain in the beginning, but gets that "lived in" look that some folks want more quickly than some other materials.

Also, with the knife being so small, the additional weight of copper won't be as noticeable as with a larger knife.

I'd have to have one in hand and preferably use it a bit to get a full idea of how much I would actually like it, but it doesn't look bad, really.

Bringing back some of the favourites of the past for a sprint run would be a cool idea though. :)

Isn't there a Boker that looks like this? Or am I just tripping?

I only have one copper knife, a Rex 45 PM2. It is 7.7oz, compared to 3.25oz for my lightest, aluminum PM2, 3.5 for a regular one. If I'm going to have a knife with copper scales, it will be something dang specific and only for some purposes, like date nights and such, I'll bring out the copper PM2. I have no intention or desire to buy any more copper and certainly not this.
I just have seen the ZT locks fail so easily, and you can say "When are you going to be cutting that way, putting pressure on the spine?!" and that's true, but why even have and pay for a lock that you can spinewhack shut? Why shouldn't I just buy a Sodbuster and be done with it in that case, or a M390 Opinel? At least I know that ring isn't going anywhere. I don't know... I just don't understand what would make me go and choose a ZT over various other brands.
EDIT: Oh wow, just peeped the price and that's crazy... That is fifty bucks more than a new copper Rex 45 PM2. Thirty dollars more than the M4 micarta Shaman. Who is this for?

I think you’re thinking of the Boker Plus Winkler collab, the Ratz6 or something like that.

I just have seen the ZT locks fail so easily,
In real life in person, or on some internet video?

I used my ZT 0561 to cross-grain baton a tree over.

The video that's part of the post has been lost to Photobucket limbo.

I have had zero lock failures, lock-slips, etc. with any of my ZT knives.
And I have had more than a few. ;)

So no, I don't buy into the supposed "rampant failure" of the locks as it runs completely counter to my real-life experiences, including the ludicrous use of batonning a tree over for no good reason.

Here's the video restored on imgur without sound:

The tree was cut and added to the firewood pile, and helped cook food on a later excursion.
Stump removed too, as it would be ugly otherwise.

I saw somebody who had evidently spent a lot of money on ZTs, make one after another fail. Sure, that is not the same as experience to be sure, but it did not inspire confidence. But, you know, there's things like this at the same time, making me think that there's some kind of differential in quality somewhere along the line, because yours is clearly a fine knife.

I never could figure out what was happening with those reporting failures.
Extreme bad luck?
Previous spine-whack induced damage? Maybe from a previous owner?
Hard to say when it's someone else's knife.
