Hey guys,
I'm looking to get into knife throwing. Just wondering what tips you may have for a newbie. Common Mistakes to avoid, what knives to get etc. Thanks!!

Tips and generalizations:

1. Most serious competitive throwers are using knives in the 13-15 inch range and 12-16 ounces in weight.

2. Practice the same environment you plan to do serious throwing in. If hunting, use animal targets in outdoor situations. If competition, use competition targets. It may be easier to hit the big targets but it is quite an adjustment to the real environment.

3. get the basics down first. Then practice them until you can execute blindfolded in the dark your basic throw. Then practice some more.

4. You do not need to spend a lot of money. Try any and every knife you can.

5. Best of all, find an experience thrower and examine their methods and grill them with questions. This will cut months off your learning curve!!!!

6. Always go back to basics when all else fails. Use whatever produces the best result for you no matter what the "guru books" say. Try everything once.

7. Go to the Sticking Point website www.commonlogic.com/knife
to keep up with the latest.

Don't fall for ad that makes a point of noting how "light" a thrower is. You want heavy, not light. Light is bad, heavy is good in a thrower.

Buy at least 3 of what ever knife (or knives) you select to begin with. Much easier to throw, note what happens, and correct in the next throw from the same spot than have to retrieve your knife after each throw and start again from scratch.

Nothing fancy, no tricks. Your initial goal should be repeatability. Same knife, same grip, same throw, same distance, should result in a stick [almost] every time before you start in on variations. At the same time, this should not stop you from finding that particular knife/grip/throw that makes that consistency easiest for you.

Check out the web site at http://www.sonic.net/~quine/thrower.html for much more.
