So I am new to this whole knife thing, but have always been interested in them. I am looking for a knife for my birthday, just something nice for everyday use, something not very expensive, but something to really introduce me to a good maker and everything. From searching the forums, i've been looking at the Spyderco Byrd line, but I guess I just want to hear what people have to say about that line, and also any other recommendations. Thanks a lot!

Try out a Spyderco Tenacious. They are pretty inexpensive and are really a good value IMO. Its got a nice grind for cutting the action is pretty slick. The Byrd line is also good from what I hear.

Welcome to the forum and the new addiction. :)

You're going to get about a billion suggestions which will do little more than confuse you. Since you have already discovered the Spyderco Byrd line I suggest you go with whichever one takes your fancy. They are good value for money knives and Spyderco is a first class knife company.

Later on you can start looking for more interesting examples once the addiction sets in. :)

I agree with this guy.

Yeah, if you like the Byrd, go with one. Not my thing, but they are a good value. Until you get used to carrying a blade, to where you feel naked without it, you will probably lose a few, so inexpensive is a good way to start.

Try the Byrd G10 Cara Cara. G10 scales and steel liners for under $30.

Welcome to the forum. Like others have said above; the Spyderco Tenacious or something from the Byrd line would be a good choice.

If you're considering Spyderco's Byrd line, I would recommend the Spyderco Persistence. Essentially, it is a smaller Tenacious model, but still offers a very nice full flat grind, G10 scales and solid construction. It is an excellent knife to introduce you to Spyderco. Just be sure that once you get bit by the Spyder-bug then there's no going back. :p

Thank you all for the suggestions and welcomes. This seems like a great community and I will of course be back here often. I think I have decided on the Byrd Meadowlark G-10 or the Cara Cara G-10.

Those are both good choices. I'm sure you'll enjoy whichever one you get.

Agreed, do what strikes your fancy, I have four Byrd knives, the Cara cara, Raven, Crossbill, and Flight, out of all of them it is a tie between Cara cara and the Raven. Go with what you want, as for the Tenacious, that is probably one of the best bang for your buck knife.
