Newb: difference between Spyderco Native models

So I'm looking to get my first Spyderco, and from what I can see on the forums, the Native is quite popular. Lot's of people like the Native S30v model and other folks like the 3D Natives. I don't really like the wire clip on the 3d model but wouldn't let that deter me either.

Can somebody tell me what the difference between this Native, SC41PSBK, and the other ones listed above? It seems to be like the Native S30v but it uses VG10 instead..., anything else?

Thanks,

Bert

some love em, some hate em. Check out the thread in the spyderco forum here, it is this exact discussion here --Welcome to the forums!--Joe

There are currently three versions (at least that I know about).

Native Lightweight: S30V blade, flat FRN frame with texturing

Native (aka Native II): AUS-10 blade, flat and smooth stainless frame

Native III: VG-10 blade with a shorter swedge, contoured FRN frame with texturing

I just got a Native III, look for model # C78****, the # C41**** is the older model.

Native Lightweight (or more often, FRN) is pretty much the original design. Black FRN handle. Thicker than the Endura handles.
Native II (stainless) is the stainless handle one. Same pattern, same blade shape and grind (and false edge), but comes in AUS 10 and a slimmer handle. Handle thickness is similar to the Endura SS models.
Native III is the new one, black FRN handle with VG-10. The handle is more 3D because if you see the old one, it's quite boxy. Comes with wireclip in a similar configuration as the Native FRN.
I personaly prefer the FRN version because the S30V is an agressive cutter. But I have confidence that the VG-10 is also very sharp and worth getting. I just haven't got around to it.

I agree 100% with Calyth, I had an occasion to check the Native III but I won't stick off my first Native(CE/FRN) :D

I find the original Native to have the best ratio (size+weight)/cutting power...
By the way, Calyth, if you had some advise to resharpen the chisel edge of it, my Native would be most grateful, since I fail to give it back its original hair popping edge :/
