I have been lurking here for a while reading all that I can. I have made a couple hidden tang knives from old saw blades but really wasn't happy with the results.
I don't really have access to decent handle material either. I am trying to do my first file knife for my son for Christmas and I am modeling it after a Knives of Alaska Cub Bear. Does anyone have dimensions on that knife like blade and handle length? I can find blade length but I am unsure if the handle length is the solid part of the handle or includes the finger grooves.
Also this will be my first knife using scales.
Do I need spacers? What would be good wood to use for scales or does anyone have something that I could pick up cheap, or just laying around? I am sure I will screw up the handle, that is my most difficult part, that and getting the bevel line near the handle. Let me know if you can help.
Thanks,
Chuck

Ben at Greenberg woods (member here and sells in The Exchange) has lots of reasonable priced wood scales. Cocobola or walnut will both look good.

No, you don't need a spacer.

I do not think the Cub Bear is a good knife ... especially for a new maker with so-so HT. It is very likely to break at that thin place.
Make a drop point hunter with a 3" blade and a 4.5" handle.
If your heart is set on the Cub Bear shape, get rid of the dip in the spine.

Look at these. The Wolf is a much more useful and stronger knife. Just make it in the proportions of the Cub Bear.

Send me an email or fill out the contact form on my website. I can set you up with some beautiful, durable and very affordable wood for your first knife.

If you want cheap wood to learn with stop by any cabinet shop and look in the trash.
