Hey everybody, Ive been looking around this place for a few days and I have to say, this place is great! So anyways Im 14 and I live in NC. I dont have any really nice knives, a few case knives and a really cool lightning OTF knife that I picked up at a local store are my good ones. Most of my knives were pretty cheap, ive got 30 or more of em, lol. But I dont usually get knives for the looks, I always buy things that ill use. I want to get a good hatchet cause mine is a full tang one and it cant keep an edge at all cause its so thin I guess. Can somebody point me to a good functional hatchet? Im thinkin of gettin a cs trail hawk.

I've heard the Gerber/Fiskars hatchet is pretty good. I don't have any experience with them though. You might want to search around the W&S section.

Ive looked at the gerber ones but Im looking for a more traditional hatchet with a wooden handle and such. By the way Im looking into making some knives. I have already made a few with my dad. They are very simple throwers shaped like this: <==>. We made em out of these axles that they hauled our doublewide with.

First off welcome... I have a Estwing No.1. Ive had it for about 2 years and i cant complain. As for making knives ive made three (nothing id try to sell or anything). But its great fun and a good hobby.

Again Welcome.

Ian.

Wow I just looked up those estwings and they are beautiful. I didnt see the "No.1" but the Estwing E24A looks great, nicer than any hatchet ive ever owned. Seen it for 30 dollars is that a good price?

Check out Gransfors Bruks, they are pricey, but not out of reach.:D

You will be able to give it to your 14 year old some day...

You seem a bit more mature than the average 14 year old that joins here. In that case, listen to the advice of the "older" members and enjoy this site. Also, the moderators are God here, do not sass the mods.

Yea I know all about the mods because I am on a few other forums about Rc cars. Just wondering what makes you say I seem Mature? Oh yea Is there even really any active members that are my age?

On maturity;

1. You're polite.

2. You don't make a habit of typing in text speak or leet.

3. You value function over form when it comes to knives.

4. You took the time to learn a few things on your own, without expecting us to spoon feed it all to you.

There are probably other things, but those stood out. Welcome to BF:)

A far as other members your age, I'm sure we have a few. It's hard to say for sure, because age sometimes isn't easy to determine through a keyboard.

what he said :)

Ahhh ok.

I looked at the gransfors bruks hatchets and they cost a bit too much for me. I like them but the estwing is on peice of forged steel and im pretty fond of that because I know it will hold up great. Any body made a thread about an estwing hatchet? I would do a search but I have yet to find a search tool on this site, is there one?

You might give this a try:

There is a search feature here at bladeforums but you need a paid membership in order to use it.

Welcome to the forum.
Check out Wetterlings hatchets. I have a 14" Hunter's hatchet that I carry for hiking, it's a great tool at a great price.

Also, the mods like a good practical joke every now and again. Red chicklets are cherry flavored... Tasty!

About the Cold Steel trail hawk -I have not found it to function very well for camping/ bushwork. I think a traditional hatchet would be better (rather than a "hawk"). The fiskars looks like a great one.

The trail hawk has a cool style, but it is too thin to split effectively. It is kind of light weight, so it doesnt chop that well either -especialy with it's rough convex edge.

I think it works best as a throwing hawk.
