Hey guys, I had a few questions for those that use straight razors. My grandfather passed away a few years ago, and I ended up with a couple of his pocket knives and a Henckles straight razor. It's been sitting in a drawer every since, and I pulled it out the other day just to look at it. It got me thinking that maybe it's time to give this thing a try..... but I have no idea where to start. I've never used anything except cheap disposables, and have no suplies except the razor itself. So, where do I start? What do I need? Where should I look to buy it at a reasonable preice? I only shave about twice a week since my facial hair is realitively thin. Is it worth using a straight razor with thin hair? Thanks in advance for any help you could give.

having thin hair will make using a str8 that much easier, I would think. As for where to start...

Learn all you can from these sites before you put your blade to your face, or you'll end up paying for it in blood and get discouraged. I have my grandfather-in-law's Wostenholm & Sons IXL straight razor from the turn of the century, and I still haven't gotten the guts to use it yet. I'm learning all I can about shave prep and whatnot while using double edge safety razors... all vintage Gillettes.

You'll need a shaving mug/bowl, a brush (badger or boar) and either shaving soap or shaving cream. Aftershave/balm might be nice if you have sensitive skin like me. I use a pre-shave oil (Shave Secret at Wal-Mart), but not everyone does. Since you have a str8, you'll need a good leather strop to keep it sharp after you get it professionally sharpened (folks at those 3 sites can direct you to good folks to send it to).

Welcome to the world of classic wet shaving!:)
