New to the forum, and looking for opinions and ;or direction.

I live in Western Canada, and my main carry needs are for dog walking and hiking.....I currently use a combo of Kershaws and Swiss Army, depending on the when and where, but am now ready to move on!

on a whim, I ordered a Benchmade Osbourne Barrage, with a Tanto blade....so toe is dipped in the water!

what I need:

- folder
- occasional critter deterrence......
- weed whacking......when my dog goes off road in the bush
- EDC, with a belt clip, never pocket as doggie treats and poop bags are in those
- one hand opening, as the aforementioned dog would be in the other hand
- I like the Tanto blade, with the 2 points, but could be moved to a drop point, etc.....
- colour is not an issue for me
- I have no brand allegiance
- I appreciate craftsmanship and engineering
- price up to $300US while I continue to educate myself in this world

so, suggestions, tips, direction?

thanks guys.

Spyderco PM2 or Para3 depending on your size preference. Choice of steels and the compression lock is bombproof.

There is a reason they are so popular. Would fit most of your criteria. Good luck, and enjoy the journey!

I don't own one yet so cannot give firsthand experience but you might give the Maserin Jager a look.

It has a belt pouch and comes in a single blade or a double with a saw that might be up your alley for the brush. I intended to get one at some point to try as a yard knife.

Mike who owns CollectorKnives has some international shipping restrictions but not sure on non-organic materials. @knifeswapper ?

There are many good choices that will fulfill your needs, and for some of the classics of each brands, here are some came to mind:

Liong Mah Warrior One V2 (great flipper with beautiful lines and Japanese influence, but a bit over price, imho, well worth it)
Benchmade Osborne 942 (reverse Tanto)
Benchmade Bailout
Spyderco PM2 (not Tanto, but a true Spyderco Classic)
Spyderco Military (not Tanto, but larger in size)
Microtech Socom Elite
Cold Steel SR1
Cold Steel Recon 1

Welcome Maddog. Your question brings back a memory from the early 1960s when camping in the Banff National Forest with my father I decided to hike up the highway alone early one morning. I was about 12 years old at the time. About a mile down the highway I caught the glimpse of something moving in the trees along side me and turned to get a look. A moment later a damn wolf the size of a Shetland pony appeared. I got the overwhelming feeling I was being stalked. I had a little slip joint in my pocket but picked up a couple of big rocks and threw one at him as I was yelling. It didn’t deter him at first but he eventually slipped back into the forest after a few minutes. Lol, I don’t think anything short of a firearm would’ve given much comfort that day.

Welcome! My suggestion would be to have a look and see what strikes you! I'd also suggest a small fixed blade! As I'm not that skilled with technical skills maybe someone could direct link the fixed and folder thread here for you to have a gander at! Upside with that thread is most knives are named, both model and maker! Beautiful pooch by the way!! Enjoy your trip into the rabbit hole of knives and welcome

K, so thanks so far......and that AD-10 is looking like a winner right now.....

......that said, for those longer hikes, perhaps back packing or camping, how about a fixed blade?

zero experience in fixeds, but would probably prefer either a regular or reversed Tanto, with serrated edge of some kind.....

thanks again guys!

For fixed blade, maybe a Cold Steel SRK;a Kobun is a 5 1/2" tanto comes serrated, or a recon tanto would be good too;they arent expensive so you can get a tanto fixed and a clip blade fixed.

I don’t know about weed whacking with a folder, but a made in BC North Arm Skaha II might fit the bill.
