Hello,

Thank you in advance for your replies.

My mother loves to cook. A couple of years ago I bought Mom a nice kitchen knife set (Messermeister Elite or whatever the top line was). I have a friend who works as a chef and has worked in 3 top NYC restaurants and that is what they recommended to me.

Anyway, I visited the parents this week and I go into the kitchen and Mom is cutting center cut pork with one of her old knives and struggling. I asked what happened to the knives I bought her and she said she doesn't like to use them because she doesn't want them to become dull. So she only uses them on occasion. Mom is 75 so no arguing with her. I saw them later, and the knives are razor sharp still. Though I saw her use them on tomatoes and fruits and to slice London broil razor thin.

I told her I would buy her a nice sharpening set. My uncle lives by Mom and would actually probably enjoy sharpening them.

My question is what is a decent sharpening set for Mom/Uncle? Is the Spyderco one good for novices and this purpose? I saw that it comes with a training dvd.

Rich, Yes the SPYDERCO Sharpner is perfect for the beginner. And for the experienced, I use one myself.
