What is the deal with list prices and discount web site prices? 30-40% off list? I really like to support my local.... but..

And what is the $ value of Pre-production or First production knives? Years from now they will be more valuable than regular production knives?

Ok, those are my question, and (if anybody cares) here is where I'm coming from.

Ok, so I'm not exactly a new Knifenut, been carrying Puma's for ~25 years, but recently I bought a cadet size puma with a clip and discovered I could actually carry a slightly larger knife without advertising or bruising; then the clip broke. I go to my local knife shop and get steered towards Benchmade... Wow. I walk out with an Ascent and discover I've been bitten by the knife bug. Three days of surfing and I think I want a 730SBT.. back to the store.... walk out with an Osbourn (148/1000).. and those Microtech's sure do feel good... I've got to get a better paying job....

Mall stores have high overhead due to signing expensive leases for their space. To seriously get around those prices you have to go to gun/knife shows (if you want to handle the product where you buy) or buy on the internet. I mostly look at pictures, specs, and reviews and buy on the internet. If I'm disapointed it tends to be with long term performance characteristics that I could not evaluate at the shop anyway.

I don't think there is significant value to most pre-production knives. Only knives that have exceptional features or mystique will appreciate over time. If a knife is associated with an elite military outfit or a legendary custom maker an unusual variant will demand a premium. As technology marches on todays knives are likely to be looked on more as obsolete and common rather than having tremendous collector value. This could change if laws were to ban a whole class of knives, but I wouldn't expect design variants to be a great investment.

By the way, the more you read this forum the more knives you'll find you need. There should be a warning message.
