I am very new in the knife making. I really enjoy watching folks build knives and have wanted to try my hand. Recently I received some 1/16 thick by 1 inch wide by 12 inch long bandsaw blades. My question is would like need to add thickness to the blades in order to make a small skinning knife? Is the 1/16 thick enough to make a strong blade or would I need to stack 4 or 5 together and weld them to make a thick enough blade? Thanks for any and all feedback

Go to Alpha Knife Supply and purchase

Yes, .062" thick steel is thick enough for blades.
you will need to use them with finesse, that's not prybar thickness.

Make sure your saw blades are NOT bimetal.
They have to be HSS High Speed steel. It's usually M2 at Very Hard ratings.

I use American made power hacksaw blades from Starrett.

You will Not be able to weld them together for a knife.

If you want thicker, buy a thicker blade.

Very Nice blades can be made from them, but because how Hard the steel is it's very slow to grind. I use ceramic belts

This particular knife was made with a tall,
thick (.125") fairly expensive, new hacksaw blade.

Id say about 10% of my knives are made this way.
I like them alot.

Welcome Sir Cumference. Fill out your profile and let us know where you live and something about you.

I use 1/16" (.065") for many of my kitchen and skinning knives.
As pointed out, it needs to be M@ or similar hardened steel. Bi-metal blades only have hard teeth.

Forge welding a stack of sawblades is not a beginner task. If you want thicker steel, follow DeadboxHero's suggestion and get some from Alpha or USA Knifemakers.
