Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the forum and so far I'm overwhelmed by the amount of awesome information here. I'm looking for some sharpening info. Is there a good thread or link that has the definitive sharpening info?

Thanks in advance!!!

Simple advice:

Buy a few simple knives to practice on, like an Opinel, a Mora, a Case trapper. :D

Feh... where's your sense of adventure Esav my boy, get stuck right into it with your Busse and your Chris Reeve .... :D

Slightly more seriously Hugh, read the stuff Esav has pointed you to and go ask questions in MT&E, you'll get good advice.

Esav--- Thanks for the terrific links. Most helpful.

The real thanks goes to the people who put that information together. I just saved it when I came across it. :)

Esav, why not make your links a sticky in this forum? It's at least as good as the steel FAQ, and you could edit and add to it as you see fit as a mod.

I've got dozens of files like that on many weapons and survival related topics. I keep updating them with the intention of posting them on my blog, but ... I'm lazy. :)

You could pay me to do it, I accept good quality bourbon .... ;) :)

Those are some great links, thank you for taking the time to compile and post them! I read through them all and there is a ton of very useful information. Those convex edge guides make me want to give it a try.

Go for it! Convex edges are very effective and remarkably easy to maintain once you just do it.

I'm still trying to work out the value of convex edges. I can see where they might increase edge retention or, maybe, make the edge less prone to damage during hard use or chopping operations, but for every day cutting usage it seems the time spent trying to maintain a convex edge is not really worth it.

I like to stick the knife on the Edgepro, or maybe the Sharpmaker, and get a seriously sharp blade with minimal effort. The freehand sharpening pros might get some fun out of maintaining a convex edge but for lazy buggers like me I don't see the value.

I don't find it a problem. I convexed a Boker Subcom, an admittedly small, thin blade, by stropping it on a Spyderco Double Stuff, first the coarse, then the fine side, and finally on the leather sheath it came in. Mostly I maintain my Bark Rivers by stropping on my shirt sleeve or a pants leg.

I have a really nice leather strop: http://www.blokeystuff.com.au/Product.php?bar=10473

However if I'm at work I usually use the cardboard back of a notepad.
