hello. i've been lurking for a few weeks because i'm in the market for a new knife. it seems that bm and spyderco get a lot of attention around here and since i've got a retailer in my town that sells both, i've made a short list. i would like some input on these knives.

delica - should i get the lightweight or stainless?

native - same question

dragonfly - same question

bm 350 mel pardue spearpoint - i'm not sure i like the way this knife looks

bm 555 griptilian - any info on what type of handle this has and how it holds up?

bm 812(?) - i'm not sure that's the right number. the handle felt super solid and it had a disc instead of a thumb stud.

i think that the stainless spydercos felt more solid but that may be my imagination.

i wear a suit nearly every day and have a small boker pen knife for that. this knife is intended to be worn with jeans or khakis and used for work around the house. although i may carry it with a suit if someone thinks any of the above aren't too bulky.

sorry for the long post. i would appreciate any help.

Hi and welcome to the forums, If I were you, I would have a look at the Benchmade 942. In my opinion it is One of the nicest benchmade knives I have owned. This knife seems smaller than it actually is. The opening is smooth, and this knife is very easy to forget you are carrying it. good luck!

From your list I'd pick the Spyderco Delica (plain edge), with the FRN scales. The stainless scales do seem to be sturdier, but they are also too slippery, and show scratches too easily. Also, the FRN Delica comes with "better" blade steel than the Delica with the stainless scales.

thanks everyone.

two votes for the delica.

kc, the 942 is a little out of my price range. maybe my wife will get me one for the big 10th aniversary. :)

for all practical purposes i am now down to the delica and the griptilian.

anybody else have any opinion, especially on the griptilian?

The Benchmade Griptilian. It is a great all round knife. Easy to sharpen, and an excellent shape for an all round utility knife. An added plus is the Axis Lock. I have a regular and a mini.

The Native in FRN is a fantastic EDC. I have a small Sebenza, Emerson Commander, Benchmade AFCK, and several other Spydercos, and the Native is still my choice most days.

My personal 'dress pant' carry is a BM 350. Slim, light but it'll get the job done.

But the FRN PE Delica also gets my vote because I do prefer a tip up knife.
