You guys probably cop this a bit so sorry if it's a repeated question. I have a mate looking to buy a quality cutthroat, has used them before,store bought Solingen I think, but was looking to upgrade. My question is what are some good brands or even makers I can check out? And what are some things I need to look for as far as quality goes , I'm a knifemaker so have a fair idea but I don't use one myself so am certainly no expert.

Dovo, Boker and Thiers Issard are probably the best known. Hart Steel is a newer American company that makes great kit. There are also lots of smaller makers, custom shops and of course vintage razors.
If I was starting out I think I would go with something reliable from a company like Dovo, in the lower price range since it will take some time to get up to speed with honing and stropping and if the blade gets screwed up it won't be a major loss.
