Greetings

I have recently succumb to this harrowing ailment of the need for steel, I tried to fight it……well……naw………that’s not true, im not fighting it at all!!!!!!

Anyhoo, I have several question for you folks if you don’t mind, figured I would just bulk them all in one thread if that’s ok. I've searched the site and didn’t find much pertaining to my questions so my apologies if something here is a repeat

- I have recently been diagnosed with Celiac Disease, it’s an intolerance to wheat and gluten. It was suggested to me that I should use all new separate cooking ware and utensils untouched by anything with wheat or gluten in it as it can absorb into the metal or Teflon…….i understand the Teflon……but the steel?

So my question is does Steel have absorption quality's to it?

My first purchase was a Buck Vantage Pro, im currently using it for food prep and such, if it were to come into contact with wheat or gluten would the steel absorb it?

Also, isnt the black coating on some knives made from Teflon?....cold steel Recon 1 or the Ontario Rat 1?.........(actually the Rat is my next purchase, tis in the works as we speak)….i thought I heard that in a utube review but I could be mistaken.

Next

My plan is to purchase a Umnumzaan, a Zero Tolerance 300 (perhaps a smaller model) and a Strider SnG over the next three years, one a year in April when tax return comes threw.

What order would you guys purchase them in?

Next I live in Winnipeg / Canada

Where would you guys purchase the above knifes from? I've heard that the sites wont ship to Canada?
Do you guys know of reputable sites that will ship to Canada?
Are there any Canadian folks on here that can give me some advice or share there experiences?

What about Assisted opening knives?.......I haven't found anything in Canadian laws that state AO's are illegal, has anyone had any issues with customs ordering something that is AO to Canada?

Although I still have a ton of questions I would finish my bible long post (SORRY) with just a general question

How long do you guys expect your top end knives to last for?........i know that’s a hard question considering the amount of or lack of abuse each individual would put there own threw.

What makes me nervous is say purchasing the Umnumzaan for a rather large sum of cash (at least to me it is) because its hailed as "One" of the bests out there but then hearing someone suggest Chris Reeves considers flipping the knife open one handed a form of abuse?

I will stop there, and thank you to anyone who responds.

Wish I could help with the absorption question but don't know.
As far as knife buying priorities if it were my decision I would probably go with ZT first due to value for the money. Hope that helps a little.

Only if the steel is brushed or bead blasted and even then it only stays on the surface. Steel will not absorb gluten, per se.

Yes, some coatings are teflon, such as the Recon 1.

In the order you have stated them.

Two fine Canadian dealers that can provide the items in question are True North Knives and S&R Knives. As far as US dealers, there are a number that encourage Canadian business, such as Knifeworks and New Graham Knives.

There are no Canadian laws that forbid an AO knife. There is even a Canada Customs ruling that specifically permits Kershaw AO knives.

A good knife, properly maintained, should outlast it's owner.

And I agree with him, however, his warranty is as solid as his knives.

I will stop there, and thank you to anyone who responds.

Hope that helps.

apf real nice of you to help that fellow & i learned quite a bit myself. i've heard so many bad things about canadian custom people stealing that i decided i would,nt ship to that country. --dennis

Thanks, Dennis. I am not sure if the Customs guys or Canada Post are to blame. They busted a Postie up here a couple of months ago for having almost a years worth of undelivered mail. I have never had any problems myself, but I have heard lots who do.

Welcome to the sickness homer999. Im a canuck fan living in calgary. Ive bought a number of knives from the us over the past few years and never had an issue once. Dealers out of the states are great. Gp knives, arizonacustomknives, truenorthknives are three Ive used w no issues out of the US. Ive also bought direct from Chris Reeve Knives, Busse, Graham Knives and Scrapyard knives. Unless its an auto it'll ship no prob. Look into Esee knives out of "workwear canada" great knives and wicked warranty

Oh yeah. And to answer the question about a knives lifespan. Obviously lagely due to type of use but theyll last a lifetime or 3 if properly maintained. If you buy that umnumzann, for a small fee CRK will clean it up to factory condition anytime you wanna send it to them. Theres NOTHING like a good custom. Good luck!
