Newbie at Hand rubbing with scotch brite

I picked up an old cheap fix blade that is cover in rust to try my hand at doing some restoration work. I want to try hand rubbing to blade with scotch brite to clean it, what way should I rub from tip to handle or spine to edge? What grit should I start with and finish with? Any other ideas or suggestions will be appreciated.

i tend to use scotch brite pads from handle towards tip (going parallel to the edge). you could also add a few drops of oil (i use mineral oil) to the blade while scrubbing it. post a pic of the blade so we can see how far off it is.
