Heelllo.

I just recently discovered the world of knives, and am about to buy my first few.

For a smaller blade, I'm probably going to buy the Camillus EDC in 154CM (I live in Japan, btw...the people here *define* "sheeple" ), something that won't scare anyone too badly.

But I'm also looking for a larger, full-sized folder, as I'm constantly doing things which require one. In searching for a large folder (approx. 4" blade), I narrowed my list down to a Voyager, an Endura, a Magna (aluminum handle), or something along the lines of a CRKT M16.

I should mention that I'm on an tight budget (can only spend approx. $40-50 on a knife, and can only stretch it slightly). And they're only my first (quality) knives, so.

Most of my questions center around the OE Magna with aluminum handle. I *think* it's a good deal (the retail is $105, some places selling for $49). But how good is the locking mechanism on the knife? I vaguely remember a post where someone said that the knife was too heavy to be carried for EDC, and something about the lockup not being that good. Is it really worth buying? (Looking for highly durable knife which will last a while, and won't break under stress (something that can be abused)).

*Any* comments or suggestions would be welcome.

BTW, is there any full-sized folder that's a framelock within this price range...? (Or maybe just wishful thinking)

Any of the knives you listed for full size are good knives.

As for the Magna, they are very good knives and 49 dollars for the aluminum scaled one is probably a pretty good price.

As far as lock-up complaints you have seen, you can search the forum and find isolated cases of almost every popular production liner lock having failed. Its usually rare, and is more of a defect in the knife than a design flaw.

Personally for what I use a folder that size for, I prefer the Spyderco Endura. Its a comfortable knife to use, is not at all heavy so its easy to tote around all day.

As for frame locks in your price range, you might check around for a CRKT S2. I dont think (not sure) that they are made anymore, but its possible you could find a dealer close out or check the individual sale forums here.

Good luck, let us know what ya decide.

Does an aluminum handle have any advantage over a Zytel handle? For aluminum, the price goes *way* up. Or is there no discernable difference?

It sounds like you've done your research. The Camillus EDC in 154CM is not only one of the best bargains out there, it is also an outstanding knife in its own right.

My favorite from your group of 4" models is the Spyderco Endura. It isn't as pretty as some, but it is tough, reliable, and extremely versatile.

I can't think of any 4" framelocks in your price range. I keep hoping that Camillus will eventually produce a 4" version of either the EDC or the Maxx. :D

I don't think there is any practical difference between Zytel and aluminum, although Aluminum generally looks nicer. I suspect that Zytel is actually tougher. My aluminum-scaled knives have steel frames underneath.

Good luck!

I took a look at the CRKT M-16 folders, and at the price range, they seem pretty close stat. wise to the Magna with Al handle.

Which one would be able to take more abuse? Any preference? One design sturdier than the other?

Thnx to those who've replied.

The Magna is an excellent buy.

It locks up tight. Mine came scary sharp out of the box.

I'm the one who complained about it being a bit heavy for an EDC. Please note that is a personal issue. Some people like a "heftier" knife, I prefer lighter knives.
