I'll start off with my question... Can I fix the blade play in my knife?

Details:
I'm not sure but I think I caused this problem by attempting to lessen the detent of my Ripple 2 with stainless steel integral/frame lock. Right out of the box the knife's lockup seemed perfect. This is my first flipper and I was very anxious to receive this knife. I figured instead of opening and closing the knife a thousand times and putting a blister on my newbie index finger, I'll lessen the detent by gently over extending the integral/frame lock. Since then I have noticed a very slight rattle. I detected blade play on both axis', side to side as well as up and down. Again, it was very slight. Adjusting the pivot screw has solved the side to side play but I still get the up and down. Also, if i grip the knife firmly or press the lock bar in slightly then there is NO blade play at all but the lock bar doesn't stay that far in. It pops back to it's natural position almost instantly and the very slight rattle returns.

1) Did I break my knife the first day out of the box or might it be a defect?

2) Is this kind of thing easy for a newbie to repair... I own simpleton toolbox type tools, no belt sanders or table drills. At least not yet.

3) Sorry if this has already been covered in a thread somewhere. I looked but didn't find answers to this specific question but I'm still getting used to the layout of the forum. Feels like there are millions of threads here.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum. Try taking the knife apart and pushing the lockbar in the oposite direction. If it was good to begin with you might have over extended the bar and it is not making good contact with the blade when locking up. You should be observent as to where you are before you apply pressure and when in the relaxed position you only moved it a slight amount. Assemble the knife and check for improvement. Hope this helps.

not to worry and welcome to the forum.

Looks like you push the lock bar out too much or over-extend it in an effort to loosen the lock up tension.

The up and down play is caused by the lock bar not 100% engaged, it's not moving to the opposite scale enough.

It's an easy task if you have a regular bearing knife but not so much in IKBS bearing system.

You will have to simply remove the locking side scale, bend it back enough so the lock bar sits at 100% lock up position (flush to the right side of the blade tang surface), I do this with all my liner/frame lock knives. This doesn't mean the actual lock up will be at 100% when you put your knife back together. Over time it will wear with repeated use and the most the lock bar will travel is 100% lock up.

With IKBS bearings, you can google it and see how much pain it is to disasemble and resemble the knife but it can be done, just have to be very careful and lots of patience.

Thanks guys. Those explinations make perfect sense. I'll google a vid on the IKBS bearings before i open mine up. Thanks again.

You might want to take it apart in a clear plastic bag.

Agreed!!! It only takes disassembling one knife to learn this valuable lesson. Years ago I took apart my Delica without a plastic bag. It's no fun watching knife parts try to escape.
