I'm sure you get this a lot, and I apologize, how do you open a folder? One that I own is a non-locking, beautiful folder from the American Historic Society w/ a buffalo coin in the handle. I think I know how, but the blade is VERY hard to pull from the handle.
One that I'm borrowing is a folder w/ a little thing sticking out on the back of the blade. It is locking, and I'm having trouble opening it.

It sounds like you are talking about a thumb stud. You should push up on the stud with your thumb to open the knife. You may want to do a search for Chris Reeve's website. I think there is an image there of someone using a thumb stud.

Wow, 4 minutes, what a quick response! Yeah, "thumb stud", thank you. I will do that search you were talking about. What about the other folder? It's really hard to pull the blade out. Am I supposed to just use a thumb-and-index finger grip and pull it out?

You might want to try putting some lubricant like Tri-Flow on the blade pivot area. This should help to loosen it up a bit.

I think I'll spray some WD-40 on that one. As for the one w/ the thumb stud, I used it today and it opened like nothing. Now it doesn't open. The blade won't move and the thumb stud has edges like that of a lighter-wheel (the little ridges), so it hurts to keep trying.

Actually, as most folks around here will tell you, your knife will either explode or disintegrate if you spray WD-40 on it;) . At the very least, WD-40 doesn't provide very much in the way of lubrication;however, it's very good at displacing water (hence the name).

Nevermind the question about the thumb-stud guys, I figured it out. It wouldn't open because the locking mechanism that keeps the blade up when the knife is open was on the wrong side when the knife closed, so the blade was stuck in a tight area where it wasn't supposed to be. About the historic folder, that's still hard to open, so I will just lube it. Thanks everyone.

WD-40 will not ruin the knife and will do in a pinch. However, there are much better lubricants availible to you like Militec, Tuff-glide, white lightning, etc.

"the locking mechanism that keeps the blade up when the knife is open was on the wrong side when the knife closed"

Sandman, it sounds like that knife is in poor condition and could be very unsafe. Please don't be the next person around here to be severely injured by his knife. I think that one should be professionally repaired or retired.

Head to your local gun dealer and track down some Shooters Choice Firepower FP10, hands down the slickest stuff around for both knives and guns. Not a cleaner, but a pure lubricant that makes metal parts GLIDE. Also distributed under the name Firepower FP10 by the manufacturer, in a white bottle.

In a pinch, Break Free CLP is available about everywhere and makes a decent lubricant, the Shooters Choice version is a black bottle with yellow markings.

There are no gun dealers in my state.

That's unfortunate. You should be able to find Break Free at Wal Mart (does your Wal Mart sell guns? Or is your state Kazakhistan?;) )or a good local sporting goods store with any type of gun cleaning equipment. Assuming your local constabulary is armed, they have to buy gun cleaning goodies somewhere.

Black spray or squeeze bottle, with yellow markings. Otherwise you should be able to find it online pretty easy, Brownells.com or just do a search on the Google.
