hey guys!
I am just starting my first knife! I am almost done. originally i was going to go with a cord wrap handle because my idea was a tanto style blade but after finishing it i decided a cord wrap wont look good on her. so I got some oak and started shapeing a handle. Now when i just about get the handle scales cut out i decided i dont like the wood idea! can you suggest another type of material I could use that would have a more modern look to it than wood? I was thinking maybe micarta but i havent ever seen it in person i dont think, and I am not sure how easy it is to work with and what not.
any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!
thanks in advance.
oh and if it helps The knife is 1/8th " thick at the thickest part and the length of the handle is going to be either 3" or 4" I might cut it shorter. so I was hopping to keep the handle as thin as possible. maybe 1/8th" scales.

Get some supply catalogs (or go on-line) and look at the different options.Micarta is a good choice. 3" or shorter for a handle seems pretty short. Is it a very small knife?
This is where planning would have been useful.Draw out the knife and cut it out of cardboard.Try it in your hand.If it needs adjustment just cut out another one. When you have a template that works, plan all the variables, such as handle, bolsters, blade grind, etc. This won't guarantee changes as you make the knife, but at least you will have a direction to go on.

actually I did do all of those things to prepare for the knife. havnt you ever had a plan change after you got started, like ytou found a better way or something. ? but thanks for the advice!

micarta is a good choice. works easy enough and very durable! and looks good with or without a buffed up finish.

If you decide on Micarta, (good choice for that knife it sounds like) make sure to use a respirator when sanding it down, the fumes are toxic and it can make for a bad day.

Actually, a respirator should be used whenever you are grinding.

Be sure to post pics when you are done.
